El Paso and Las Cruces are destinations for Republican House members traveling to 13 states to have hearings about immigration reform in August, officials with House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., and House Majority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Thursday.
The locations for the hearings, which are among 21 this summer, were not announced. A list of the selected speakers at those hearings hasn't been released.
Members of the House Administration Committee will be in Las Cruces Aug. 3 to hear testimony on the question: How can Congress best protect the integrity of the federal voting process by combating election fraud and eliminating non-citizen voting?
In El Paso on Aug. 17, members of the House Judiciary Committee will seek to answer the following questions:
What is the financial impact of illegal immigration on communities along the U.S. border, and could these costs rise under the (Senate) bill?
What is the impact on efforts to extend a border security fence under the (Senate) bill's requirements regarding consultation with the Mexican government?
Will efforts to limit illegal immigration be inhibited by the (Senate) bill's provisions relating to local law enforcement?
Republican House members have halted negotiations with Senate members over immigration legislation in order to conduct the hearings. Some Democrats have called the hearings a stalling tactic.
