Immigration officials arrest 18 in Chesapeake, including sex offender who had been deported




Federal immigration officials arrested 18 people during an operation last month in Hampton Roads, including 16 who had been convicted of crimes ranging from sexual assault of a minor to driving under the influence.

The operation – which spanned from July 24-28 – targeted the area "in and around" Chesapeake, according to a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news release.

The release said one of the people arrested in Chesapeake was a Mexican citizen who was arrested in November 2009 in Pennsylvania in connection with a sex offense. The man was convicted the following May of "sexual assault charges against a minor" and served more than two years in a state prison before being released and deported.

The man was found July 25 inside a Chesapeake home, having re-entered the United States without permission, the release said.

An ICE spokeswoman declined to identify the sex offender, explaining "federal privacy laws" prevented her from releasing such information because he was arrested on immigration charges.

The other two people who were arrested – who had not been previously convicted of crimes – were "recent border crossers," the spokeswoman said.
