CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A week-long operation by federal immigration officials across the country has led to hundreds of arrests, more than 160 in North Carolina and South Carolina.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Wednesday that the operation targeted people who had been previously convicted of crimes who were illegally living in the United States.

The agency reported 139 arrests in North Carolina and 24 in South Carolina.

Among those arrested was a man living in West Columbia, S.C. who had been previously convicted of assault charges and is charged with first-degree murder in Florida.

Officials say that over 2,900 people were arrested in the operation across the country, including nearly 1,300 people with multiple criminal convictions.
