Immigration watchdog not 'softening' on Trump

The leader of a pro-immigration enforcement organization says it is sticking with Donald Trump even after he appeared to soften on the issue of illegal immigration.

"If (Trump) diverges from those promises when he is sworn in," says William Gheen of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, "we will be his worst enemy."

Political analysts have pointed out that Trump's strong stance on border security – "we're going to do a wall" – helped him stand out in the Republican presidential primary.

But that strong stance could be weakening as November draws near.

During a town hall meeting televised on Fox News, Trump said he is open to "softening" federal laws dealing with illegal aliens.

"There could certainly be a softening because we're not looking to hurt people," he told Sean Hannity. "We want people…we have some great people in this country but we're going to follow the laws of this country."
Conservative website Redstate, which is critical of Trump's candidacy, noticed that the comment put Trump supporter, columnist and author Ann Coulter, on the defensive.

"I don't think it is a change in policy," said Coulter, who is famous for her send-them-back views on illegal immigrants.

The comment also drew the attention of Jeb Bush, who was blasted by Trump during the primary for his supposedly weak stance on illegal immigration.

"All the things that Donald Trump railed against, he seems to be morphing into," Bush said in a radio interview, Politico reported.

Gheen agrees that Trump won the primaries because of the promises he was making to Americans to "build a wall and deport all illegals while slowing or stopping Muslim refugee importation."

Asked about its response to Trump, Gheen says ALIPAC will continue to back Trump.

"Because Hillary Clinton and her running mate, (Tim) Kaine, have promised amnesty to illegal aliens within the first 100 days of a win for them," Gheen says.
