The Internet Blows Up Over GOP Rep’s Tweet About Immigration

The Internet Blows Up Over GOP Rep’s Tweet About Immigration

Republican Iowa Rep. Steve King on Sunday tweeted a message in support of Dutch nationalist politician Geert Wilders that included a concern that the children of recent immigrants can’t “restore our civilization.”

Republican Iowa Rep. Steve King on Sunday tweeted a message in support of Dutch nationalist politician Geert Wilders that included a concern that the children of recent immigrants can’t “restore our civilization.”

That message drew massive backlash from liberals and even a few Republicans.

“Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies,” King tweeted.

Wilders is a dark horse candidate for the Dutch presidency and has campaigned on the promise of “de-Islamizing” the Netherlands. He believes Islam is incompatible with western civilization.

Critics of King’s tweet accused it of being an endorsement of racism, Nazism and even genocide.
The liberal outlet Slate declared King’s tweet is “an apparent, explicit call to protect white ‘culture and demographics’ from immigrants. It’s the type of rhetoric that you might find at a Klan rally.”

At least one fellow Republican lawmaker has criticized King’s comment. Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo, who is Cuban-American, wondered if he counted as “someone else’s baby” in a reply to the Iowa congressman’s tweet.

King is a well-known immigration hawk who has been criticized in the past for his remarks on the subject. During an MSNBC panel last July, the lawmaker was called a racist for pushing back against a fellow panelist’s joy that “old white people” are going away and arguing for the greatness of western civilization.

MORE COVERAGE at "related link", excerpt:

Social media exploded Monday night after Rep. Steve King, speaking of Western civilization, asked: “Where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”
King’s comments came during an appearance on MSNBC, when Esquire Magazine’s Charles Pierce expressed joy over the fact that “old white people” would play less of a role in American politics in the future.

“If you’re really optimistic, you can say that this is the last time that old white people will command the Republican party’s attention, its platform, its public face,” Pierce said. “That hall is wired by loud, unhappy, dissatisfied white people.”

“This ‘old white people’ business does get a little tired, Charlie,” King replied. “I’d ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you’re talking about, where did any other subgroup of people contribute more to civilization?”

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes interjected. “Than white people?” he asked.

“Than Western civilization itself,” King said. “It’s rooted in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and the United States of America and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That’s all of Western civilization.”

Congressman Steve King and Geert Wilders are both correct! And the real racism here is all this terrible anti-white rhetoric on this show King was responding to! And this writer is making a big error calling Geert Wilders a "dark horse" candidate.

Donald Trump won the US Presidency and now Marine Le Pen and Geert Wilders are poised to win theirs!

I am keeping my fingers crossed for both those candidates.

If they get in, it will possibly make Pres.Trump's job easier.

THAT was the only racist statement, been said before but never gets rebuffed or called what is is - racist and age discrimination. Some of these shows are just not worth the effort to participate in - let them talk amongst their like till they are blue in the face and have zero ratings.

    So, what's the problem?

Latinos always throw in your face there greatness, there power and maximizing the spread of their culture.

    Same thing with African Americans.

Why is it racist for a Caucasian American National of a Caucasian country to be proud of their own heritage and culture?

This is our country, you invaded our home land. If you dislike white culture so much then get the hell out!

Why is it not racist for all other nationalities that parade their Latino greatness and foreign flags on the white-mans land?

Anyone ever notice they are always called old white people by these people? Are all white people old? I don't see it. It would appear white people are supposed to be ashamed of being white in the current atmosphere of the world. Do I detect racism and double standards here? Did Obama administration put all this white hate out there. It appears to have showed it face during his time in office.

Always a lot of chatter when the truth is spoken @ something the crybabies don't want to hear.
