Senator: Players should boycott 2011 All-Star Game

Senator: Players should boycott 2011 All-Star Game

    By Sean Lengell

Sen. Robert C. Menendez, the Senate's sole Hispanic, has urged Major League Baseball players to boycott next year's All-Star Game in Phoenix over Arizona's new immigration law.

In a letter Monday to Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Michael Weiner, the New Jersey Democrat said the Arizona law to crack down on illegal immigrants "is an embarrassment to our country."

"In every century and generation, immigrants have contributed to the progress, prosperity and vitality of this nation," Mr. Menendez wrote. "While I understand the frustration about the failures of our current system, states should not be permitted to enact their own discriminatory immigration laws while the federal government works to reform our laws."

Mr. Menendez, who said that one in four major leaguers is of Hispanic descent and more than 25 percent of the players overall are foreign-born, has called for the boycott unless the law is repealed or the game is moved to another location.

The law — set to take effect this summer, though expected to be mired in court challenges — calls for law enforcement officials to question people about their immigration status if they have reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.

Mr. Weiner has come out against the law, saying it could hurt hundreds of players.

Mr. Menendez is the latest in a growing list of high-profile public and religious officials calling for boycotts of Arizona. But state's two Republican senators — John McCain and Jon Kyl — both support the law.

And do these players fully understand that, if he could, Menendez would happily advocate for their displacement by illegal alien hispanic players?

    This is really bothering me

Mr. Weiner has come out against the law, saying it could hurt hundreds of players.
Now is wiennie trying to tell me that mlb is above the law and E-Verify means nothing and Baseball is above the law and full of Illegal aliens.

Or is he telling me that hundreds of thousands of "Fans" like myself do not like sports mixed with politics and will never spend another dime on anything baseball?

So is this an admission that MLB is employing illegal invaders?
Perhaps it's the fans who should be protesting MLB? I notice how Mr. Weiner does not make that suggestion....

There is NO reason why we have to import foreign-born players, mostly hispanic. How "diverse" is that? There are plenty of players right here in the USA who are more than willing and capable of playing in MLB.

I say STOP importing players and start signing up Americans.

Bobby Menendez needs to go the way of Corslime, he has failed his constituents big time, by his pimping for hispanic illegal aliens. VOTE HIM OUT!!!

If MLB makes such a boneheaded move, they deserve to lose millions!

I stopped attending pro baseball games--

I stopped attending pro baseball games--years ago with the exception of two games to which I was invited. I did not want to say "no" to my friend. After that, I said "No thanks" and I have not gone again. I do not even watch them on television.

When I go to a game, I want to watch American kids play. I suppose I could start attending college games, but I am not sure how "integrated " they are.

I have been a football fan all my life. I have held season tickets for 38 years. If football imports players in the ratio of baseball, lifelong football lover or not--no more tickets!!!

Why can't theses players play in their own country?? At season's end--perhaps a true World Series???

the players themselves get special visas because they play a sport.
it usually good for the baseball season from spring training in Feb. till about the time the world series is expected to be over.

Ditto that, misterbill! American sports should be for American citizens, Japanese sports should be for Japanese citizens, Russian sports should be for Russian citizens, etc., etc. I'm all for countries competing against each other, however, I do not support the interchanging of athletes.

    More cheap unqualified labor

Greedy owners shop In other countries for players to pay less money for less talented players. Baseball Is losing fans because the quality of the game Is suffering due to this Importation of more "cheap labor". Baseball should be looking to American high schools and colleges for their players not In Guatamala or Honduras. These are "facts" and It follows all of the other political correctness that has run amok with our Federal Government TS
