Mississippi House votes down immigration bill

After a lengthy, heated debate, the Mississippi House defeated a measure designed to curb illegal immigration.
The bill would have required employers to verify employees’ Social Security numbers and pay fines for hiring illegal immigrants. A parade of representatives offered a slew of amendments to the bill including a provision by Rep. John Mayo, D-Clarksdale, to exempt small farmers.

"In the Delta, when it comes time for a farmer to chop cotton he will go to a high school and hire the football team," Mayo said. "Although farms are often part of corporations, a lot of our farms are locally owned and they don’t have the resources to check every Social Security number."

Other proposed amendments sought to create a Department of Labor and allow for a minimum wage increase to $7.25. Bogged down by the amendments, the bill failed to gain widespread support and was overwhelmingly rejected.

Never look at another flag. Remember, that behind Government, there is your country, and that you belong to her as you do belong to your own mother. Stand by her as you would stand by your own mother
