Italian official slams Vatican over immigration criticism

Italian official slams Vatican over immigration criticism

Rome - Italy's Reforms Minister Umberto Bossi lashed out Saturday at the Vatican over criticism of Italy's immigration policies by Roman Catholic church officials and publications. "Words that make little sense," Bossi said, referring to the condemnation that followed claims made this week by a group of Eritreans that some 73 of their fellow would-be immigrants died in the Mediterranean during a journey that began in Libya.

"So-called civilized societies," are increasingly developing signs of "rejection of the foreigner," the Vatican's top migrant affairs official Monsignor Antonio Maria Veglio, said in a radio interview Saturday.

In "extreme cases" people in such societies are more inclined to divide their goods with "domestic animals rather than with foreign people," he added.

Veglio also cited estimates that since 1988 some 14,660 mostly Afrcian would-be migrants and refugees, are believed to have died crossing the Mediterranean in an attempt to reach Europe.

On Friday, L'Avvenire, a newspaper published by Italy's bishops' association, said the West's "eyes are closed," to the plight of migrants, in a similar way, the newspaper suggested, that many countries failed to respond to the Nazi persecution and mass murder of the Jews.

But the criticism was rejected by Bossi who heads the anti-immigration Northern League party, the junior partner in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's conservative coalition.

"Let the Vatican which regards (illegal) immigration a crime, open its doors" to the immigrants," Bossi said, speaking in Calalzo di Cadore, a town in northeastern Italy.

The tragedy involving the would-be immigrants, has Italy's opposition and rights groups to demand that the government review its anti-immigration policies.

In particular they condemn an Italian-Libyan accord which came into effect earlier this year, and which United Nations officials say violates the rights of political refugees seeking asylum.

The incident involving the Eritreans has also triggered a diplomatic row between Italy and Malta.

Malta's top military officer on Friday said a Maltese patrol boat had made contact with the five Eritreans earlier this week, but said an rescue offer was turned down by the would-be immigrants who instead said they wanted to reach Italy.

Brigadier Carmel Vassallo also told The Times of Malta newspaper, that the Eritreanswere in good health and "in good spirit," contradicting, Italian officials who say the five were in a serious condition, suffering from dehydration and heat exhaustion.

This sentence peeves me off... What a putz. American's stormed Normandy and liberated France from the Nazi's and we didn't stop there. How quickly he forgets that America was covertly supplying the war machines and fuel, long before we declared war. Between the Zimmerman Telegraph and the Lusitania are the reasons that launched America into Europe's war... when it started hitting home. We had U-Boats parked off the Atlantic Coast sinking anything they thought were supplies, including boat loads of bananas. Putz doesn't know that. Lastly, it wasn't until very late in the war when the atrocities of Hitler were known to the world. You can't stop something you know nothing about. This guy is projecting a bunch of displaced blame. Really, what did the Vatican do to save the Jews from Hitler?

Oh, our eyes are not closed, we clearly see that illegal immigration is a self inflicted plight, which should not be encouraged.

If the Vatican were not hoping for the New World Order, in which they believe they would play a major part, perhaps their thinking would change and they would open their coffers to help people in poverty and persecution around the world.
Tithes from parishioners supporting pederast priests, the Vatican Bank getting involved in something akin to money-laundering (read the book Vatican Connection), they apparently believe they are qualified to preach to nations to circumvent laws.
As one whose family tree drips with bishops and archbishops, and as a recovering Catholic, I feel the right to tell them to stuff it.

Thats right. Practice what you preach. America has opened its doors to more legal immigrants than any other country in the world. The Vatican should open its doors to illegal immigrants and see how long it takes them to back off telling other countries what to do.

I read where the Pope was told about what was to happen to the Jews and they decided to keep it quiet and do NOTHING!!!
I always wondered how Hitler did it, how people went along with him and didn't question him.
And now I know how.......... I see it with my own eyes.
I see people blindly following a leader into HELL!

Vatican Condo's is what illegal immigrants NEED.
Maybe we can airlift whole family over there, so we don't fly an empty cargo planes back and forth from Iraq and Afganistan.
What's the difference between a camel and a mule anyway?
If you can get a 100 into a semi trailer a cargo plane must be able to hold a thousand!
If New York can do it so can the rest of us.
The Poop needs more Catholics anyway

I've said the same thing and many Catholics hate it.
It's another reason for me to be a reformed Catholic.
I don't blame Catholics, I blame the Heirachy in the church that turned a blind eye.
JUST LIKE THEY DID WITH PEDOPHILE PRIESTS!!!
It's what they do best and then they make others tell their sins in a dark closet????
Holy water??? What was that all about?
I get the wine though ....
