A 52-year-old day care worker is accused of stabbing five people, including three baby girls no more than a month old, at a short-term residential care facility in Queens early Friday. Police say they recovered a butcher knife and a meat cleaver at the scene, reports NBC New York.

Seven infants were inside the facility when the woman attacked a female co-worker and the children just before 4 a.m., according to an official.

She is in police custody at an area hospital; officials said she has regained consciousness, but it's unclear if she's talking.
The 31-year-old father who was injured was stabbed in the leg; it wasn't clear whether his child was one of the infants stabbed. He, along with the worker stabbed in the torso, are hospitalized in critical but stable condition. -NBC New York

The victims were taken to New York Presbyterian Queens in stable condition.

Crazy lady goes on stabbing spree at NYC daycare

An unhinged woman went on a stabbing spree inside an illegal Queens daycare early Friday morning, slashing three newborns — including one as young as 3-days old — and two adults before slitting her own wrist, police and sources said.

The bloodbath unfolded just before 4 a.m. at a multi-family home on 161st Street near 45th Avenue in Flushing where the daycare was being operated under the name Mei Xin Care Inc., cops said.

The woman — identified by law enforcement sources as Yu Fen Wang, 52 — used a knife to stab the babies, as well as a man who was struck in the leg, NYPD Assistant Chief Juanita Holmes said at a press conference.

The newborns are 3-days, 2-weeks and 1-month old, sources said, and officials confirmed the man is the father of one of them.

Wang, who works at the daycare, also attacked a co-worker in the torso before slashing her left wrist.

Two knives — including a meat cleaver — were recovered at the scene.

Wang was found in the basement with cuts to her wrist, a bloody knife near nearby. The second knife was found in the kitchen, sources said.

All of the victims, including Wang, are in stable condition at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, police added.

The babies and adults lived in the brick-front home — which a high-ranking source said doubled as a citizenship mill.

“The daycare was illegal. They used it as a place for Chinese women to keep babies they gave birth to,” the source explained. “The moms would then get citizenship because babies were born here.”

In total, seven babies were inside the home at the time of the attack, according to police.

Sources said multiple cribs were found on the first floor of the home.

Police are trying to determine whether the mothers gave birth at the home, the source added.

Mei Xin Care is a registered business with the Department of State — but it’s unclear whether it’s licensed as a daycare through the city Department of Health.

    The DOH didn’t immediately comment.

The motive for the stabbings wasn’t immediately known — but sources said Wang likely suffers from psychological issues.

Could this thread be moved to immigration, since it involves anchor babies and citizenship mills?

I'm assuming this wasn't done originally because the story that started the thread made no mention of anchor babies, citizenship mills, or immigration. So, it was originally placed correctly.

Yes MW, it was not in the original story posted. We know that the mainstream media and other news outlets are often reluctant to tell us about immigration status. We may find out later, as in this case.

It Was a Suspected ‘Birth Tourism’ Site. Then Came Late-Night Screams.

    By CHRISTINA GOLDBAUM

Many neighbors had long been suspicious about the red brick townhouse in Queens.
Bryan Kim, 19, said he had seen pregnant women showing up at the home.
Sheng Long Peng, 70, said he had often seen the owner of the home arrive in his car with groups of pregnant women.
Elizabeth Lee, 51, said she saw minivans drop off women with suitcases.
“They would arrive as much as twice a week,” she said.
By the time Kayla Cho, another neighbor, woke up shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Friday to the sound of high-pitched screaming coming from the home, followed by cries for help, the questions about the mysterious residence had taken a violent turn.
When officers arrived at the house in the Flushing neighborhood, they found three infants and two adults had been stabbed by an employee who then cut her own wrist, according to the police.
Law enforcement officials said the employee was Yu Fen Wang, 52, who was unconscious when officers arrived at the scene. She regained consciousness after officers applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, and was taken into custody. She is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
At the home where the stabbings occurred, officials said they found cribs for 11 children and believe that nine babies were present at the time of the attack. Two knives were recovered at the scene, the police said.
The infants who were stabbed were 13, 22 and 33 days old, according to a law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. An official offered conflicting accounts of an age for one of the children earlier in the day.
One of the adults, who was stabbed in the leg, was the 31-year-old father of one of the infants, the police said. The other adult, a 63-year-old-woman who was stabbed in the torso, was a co-worker of the employee, according to the police.
As of Friday afternoon, the three infants, two girls and a boy, were in critical condition; one of the girls sustained more serious injuries than the others, said Juanita Holmes, assistant chief in the Police Department’s Patrol Borough Queens North.
Earlier reports described the home as a residential day care. But law enforcement officials suspect the residence was used to house women from Asia who traveled to the United States on tourist visas to give birth to their children in order to secure them American citizenship, according to the law enforcement official.
“We think it had something to do with immigration and citizenship,” the law enforcement official said. “It had something to do with their desire to have the kids as American citizens and it would eventually help the parents.”
Officials do not know if the mothers will take them back home in what appeared to be a “maternity tourism” or “birth tourism” operation. Once U.S. citizen children turn 21 they can sponsor a parent for a green card.
Maternity tourism is a small but persistent phenomenon and is particularly prevalent in California, where in 2015 federal agents raided more than 30 locations that they said were part of the industry. Typically, “birth tourists” are people with sufficient money to travel from foreign countries to give birth in the United States. The parents and their infants then return to their home country.
“If you’re born here, then you don’t have to worry about ever having illegal status,” said Angela Maria Kelley, an immigration adviser for the Open Society Foundations, which promotes democracy and human rights around the world.
Many facilities that operate as a place for foreign-born women to give birth register as day care centers because it is less likely to raise questions, said Mingli Chen, an immigration lawyer. Mr. Chen estimates that half of these operations are legally registered but as day cares. They do that so “they don’t have to worry as much about government inspection,” he said.
The home in Flushing was not registered as a licensed or regulated child care program, according to the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. But even as the facility operated under the regulatory radar, its activities had not gone unnoticed by residents.
According to the New York City Department of Buildings, the residence began to garner complaints from neighbors about the owners’ use of the space in 2016, after being purchased by Meiying Gao and Xuexin Lin. In August, neighbors registered three complaints: first, that the neighbors suspected that the residents were doing construction without necessary permits; then that they seemed to have converted the basement into an apartment and were developing multiple rooms on the second floor; and, finally, that the second floor looked like it had been converted into an apartment. Last November, a neighbor complained that the home was being used like a hotel.
But inspectors responding to the complaints were not able to gain access to the residence, according to the Buildings Department.
A phone call on Friday to a number associated with Xuexin Lin was answered by a man who said “no comment” and hung up.
According to the law enforcement official, investigators did not know before Friday that the home in Flushing appeared to be a maternity tourism site. The official also said neighborhood residents described other sites being used for the same purpose, but that those reports had not been confirmed. “There are people in the neighborhood who didn’t seem all that shocked,” the official said.
Pauline Yip, 65, another neighbor, said she often saw pregnant women taking strolls around the residence in the afternoon. “I thought to myself, this must be a birthing center, but I didn’t know,” she said in Chinese.
Though now suspected of being an illegal “maternity tourism” or “birth tourism” operation, some officials also suggested that the home may have also served as a maternity facility for Asian women who are in the United States legally but have no relatives to help them.
City Council member Peter Koo, who represents the neighborhood, said that it was a Chinese and Korean tradition for women to rest and be cared for a month after they give birth. When family is not available, often in immigrant communities, businesses may fill the caretaker role.
“If they don’t have family they rely on outside support,” Mr. Koo said, adding that he’s “not sure that’s what this place did.”
