    (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirms deportation officers arrested 13 people for immigration violations in Owensboro.

We're told of the 12 men and one woman arrested, nine are from Mexico and four are from Guatemala.

ICE says three of the individuals had been deported from the U.S. in the past. They also say one is an immigration fugitive, three were at-large criminal aliens, four others overstayed their temporary visas, and two had no prior encounters with U.S. immigration authorities.

We're told a 53-year-old Mexican man, who was deported back in 1986, has a violent criminal history that includes convictions for aggravated assault of a police officer, illegally possessing a firearm, making terroristic threats, and multiple DUI convictions. We're told he had a loaded firearm on his person at the time of his arrest.

His case has been referred to the U.S. Attorney's Office for prosecution.

"If we want the immigrant community to participate and to report crime when it happens, and to trust their local agencies of law enforcement and government, we have to build that trust," Hispanic Ministries Director Chris Guitierrez said. "We stay here. Federal agents come and go, but we stay here. So we need to ask the question how are we going to make sure that people trust us?"

ICE says several of the other individuals had prior criminal histories that included assault, DUI, forgery, and financial or identity fraud.

Those arrested are in custody with ICE pending disposition of their respective cases.
