An 11-year-old boy was burned in a car fire Wednesday along with his father after a group of armed men shot at them in south Juárez, Chihuahua authorities said.

Both died at the scene.

Bryan Alejandro Andrade Pérez was riding in a 1986 red Chevrolet Suburban driven by his father, Fidel Andrade Gutiérrez, 40, when the gunmen opened fire, officials with the Chihuahua State Attorney General's Office said.

Afterward, the gunmen set fire to the vehicle with the boy still inside, officials said.

The father also was burned while trying to get away from their assailants and suffered burns on 60 percent of his body, a spokesperson said.

It is unclear if the victims died as a result of the shootout or the burns suffered.

Thirty-nine bullet casings were recovered at the scene. An unidentified man was also hurt and taken to a hospital.

The double homicide took place at Paseo del Santuario and Paseo del Durazno streets, at Villa Colonial neighborhood, authorities said.
