The General Services Administration announced the planned opening on Wednesday of two additional southbound lanes on Interstate 5 at San Ysidro to handle traffic heading into Mexico.
The lanes will open at 9 a.m. as part of the the third phase of an eight-year, $741 million project to expand the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry, the busiest in the Western Hemisphere.
“We realize that Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of the summer travel season,” said Patricia Chang-Lynn, deputy regional commissioner for the federal agency’s Public Buildings Service.
“As modernization and expansion of the San Ysidro LPOE continues, GSA is providing the traveling public additional vehicle lanes to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.”
With the opening of the new lanes, there will be a total of six lanes on southbound I-5 just south of the Camino De La Plaza Bridge. An additional four lanes will open in June 2019 for a total of 10.
Once the project is completed at the end of this year, the port will have essentially been entirely replaced and boast 62 northbound vehicle inspection booths to speed traffic into the United States.
