The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida has ruled that security pat-downs of football patrons at the Tampa Bay stadium in Tampa Florida are unconsitutional. The Tampa Sports Authority was sued by Gordon Johnson who claimed that the sports authority had no right to conduct suspicionless searches. The Tampa Sports Authority has announced that it will appeal the decision.

The United States Departments of Justice will add 20 Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) to the five federal law enforcement districts along the border: They "will prosecute only immigration-related offences, including alien smuggling, entering the United States without inspection, illegal re-entry, possession of firearms as an alien, illegal employment of undocumented aliens, human trafficking and document fraud," according to the Department of Homeland Security release. The release also notes "ncluding the additional prosecutors, the number of AUSAs in the Southwest border districts has increased 29 percent since 2000, to a total of 561. In the same time frame, the Department of Justice’s immigration prosecutions have increased by approximately 40 percent. (About 30 percent of all new criminal cases are for immigration-related crimes, making immigration cases the largest category of cases filed by the United States Attorneys’ Offices.) In 2005, over 95 percent of immigration prosecutions resulted in convictions, with approximately 85 percent of convicted defendants serving time in prison."

The The House has passed H.R.5852, the 21st Century Emergency Communications Act of 2006, which requires the Department of Homeland Security to strengthen its efforts to improve emergency communications.

The Department of Homeland Security's Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar and National Guard Bureau General Steven Blum gave an update at a July 25 press conference. Among the statistics they shared were the following:
*Numbers are up by 20 percent in the area of narcotics apprehensions, over 1.2 million pounds of narcotics so far this year.
*Deaths are down nationally by about 7 percent.
*They are averaging about 150 repatriations into the interior of Mexico on a daily basis.
