Sheriffs start fund to defend SB1070
Sheriffs start fund to defend SB1070

PHOENIX -- The sheriffs of two Arizona counties have started a legal defense fund to help finance the court battle over Arizona's new immigration law.
The fund was started by Sheriffs Paul Babeu of Pinal County and Larry Dever of Cochise County. Dever's county borders on Mexico. While Babeu's county does not touch the border, he says the western part of it is in the main corridor for smuggling drugs and humans from Mexico and that the area has been taken over by smugglers.
Babeu said of the fund, "All of the monies that would be donated would be used solely for the purpose of defending this law from a perspective of law enforcement."
He said, "Our goal is to raise enough money to sustain the fight. We are fighting the federal government, which has limitless resources."
The Arizona law, scheduled to take effect July 29, requires law enforcement officers -- who have stopped someone for investigation -- to inquire about their immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion that they are in the United States illegally. Seven suits have been filed challenging the law, including one by the U.S. Justice Department which claims Arizona's law is unconstitutional because immigration enforcement is the responsibility solely of the federal government.

PHOENIX - U.S. Sen. John McCain has pledged $5,000 to a legal fund for two Arizona county sheriffs defending themselves against lawsuits over the state's new immigration enforcement law.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever already have retained an attorney to defend their offices against federal litigation if they're prevented from implementing the law.
Barring a federal court ruling to stop it, Arizona's strict illegal immigration law is scheduled to take effect July 29.
Pinal County is 80 miles north of the Mexican border and Cochise County borders Mexico. Both counties are considered major corridors for drug and human smuggling.
The sheriffs say there's been a stream of illegal-immigration-fueled criminal activity passing through their counties daily for more than a decade.
