U.S. Senate candidate Dr. Kelli Ward said Wednesday that she supports President Trump's idea to have the military secure the U.S.-Mexico border until his wall is built, saying it's a "great option" for now.

State Sen. Ward said she believes the National Guard is "very well-prepared for this mission" and have been "doing it in other countries for decades."

The potential move appears to be motivated by a caravan of migrants making their way from Honduras to the U.S. border.

"Until we can have a wall with proper security, we are going to be guarding our border with our military. That's a big step," Trump said at the White House Tuesday.

Ward - who has visited the southern border multiple times - said getting from one side to the other is as easy as stepping under a fence in some places.

Join me on @FoxNews this morning at 6:30 AZ (9:30 Eastern) - we’re talking border security, putting our military on our border, & why we must #BuildTheWall!

This is our border - DC insiders want us to believe it is “secured” by those 4 flimsy strands of barbed wire...it’s not.

5:08 AM - 4 Apr 2018 from Phoenix, AZ

Ward, running for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Jeff Flake, recently visited an Arizona cattle rancher who showed her just how unprotected the border is in some areas of Arizona.

"We're supposed to believe that the four flimsy strands of barbed wire, that are down there between Mexico and the United States, are supposed to protect our border from the traffickers," she said, adding that 25 miles of the ranch is up against Mexico.

Ward, who will face Rep. Martha McSally (R-Ariz.) in the Republican primary, argues that "insiders" in Washington, D.C., claim that the border is secure, but her visit to the ranch shows the need for a wall.

Officials say the border wall will cost $20-25 billion. About $1.6 billion was included in the spending bill Trump signed last month to replace some of the existing border fencing.
