    Paper Candidates America First

    America First 2008
    Update

Tommie Thompson, Fred Thompson, Ron Paul, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter and probably a few others have something in common. They aren't showing up in New Hampshire and Iowa. They don't have any staffs and they aren't raising any money.

Nevertheless, the press always ready for a new story reports on their running for presidency, as if they can magically click their fingers and have a viable chance of running for office. They may be running for a variety of reasons, to gain exposure (always good for a candidate), to ask supporters to give them money that they can use for their next serious campaign (Chris Dodd is famous for running and then not running for President) or because they are the darling of a particular political viewpoint (Ron Paul). But they certainly don't have as their objective to run for the nomination and win the Presidency. ( I get email on what a great candidate Ron Paul would be. Would someone please send me an email saying they have contributed $20 to his campaign)

I have continually stressed that a campaign is messenger, message, money and machine.

The four candidates on the Republican side that are seriously running for President are McCain, Romney, Giuliani and Tancredo While the first three lack any coherent message (except I am a great guy), they have the other three, messenger, money and machine.

When town meetings are held in New Hampshire, the four candidates that are represented are Mc, Rm, Gu, and Tc. They have offices in New Hampshire. They have workers that can represent them and they are visiting the state. (Tancredo has been tireless.)

I had it from an inside source about two weeks ago that McCain was tanking. That he simply was not bringing in any money. Now this is an expensive operation. If he has 140 employees, estimated, then at $30,000 per year, that is $5 million right there in expenses. Considering many consultants are high paid, then his expenses are even higher. This is not to count office space, advertising materials, travel, phones, etc. Having $10 million in the bank is not a lot against those expenses.

Published reports now say he has fired half his staff. This is a blow he cannot recover come. His campaign is over. It is like losing at Waterloo, you are just not going to be able to get your momentum back. No reason to support him by his backers. (And my source was very, very, right.)

Big smart money is interested in backing a candidate to be a front man for their positions (open borders, free trade, massive government spending). McCain is too much a maverick to have any inherent appeal to this crowd, but when he was in front, they would put money in his campaign.

Romney will eventually raise more money than Giuliani because he is a better front man for moneyed interests. Giuliani is too independent, and has too much liberal baggage that he cannot overcome.

Tancredo is running a much lower budget, therefore more sustainable campaign effort. With three to five operatives in Washington and keeping down expenses, no high paid consultants, then Tancredo will be in the field for the primaries. Personally, I think that by the time registering for the primaries comes around, (This September?) the paper candidates wil have disappeared.

Whether Giuliani disappears before the January 2008 NH primary is a question. But if he doesn't it will be a three way race between, Giuliani, Romney and Tancredo.

Well, this is encouraging. Has Tancredo as a serious contender!

McCain blew it with his Kennedy connection. All he got from that was political herpes.
