Woman’s body found bound in suitcase in affluent Connecticut town

A young woman’s body was found bound in a suitcase in an affluent Connecticut town. A homicide investigation is underway.

Police on Tuesday reportedly arrested a man who previously dated Valerie Reyes, the woman whose body – bound at the hands and feet – was discovered last week stuffed into a large red suitcase dumped on a roadside in an affluent Connecticut town.

The Greenwich Police Department announced the arrest of an individual "believed to be involved" in Reyes' death. That same person had also "fraudulently used the ATM card” that belonged to her.

NEW YORK WOMAN, 24, PREDICTED HER MURDER BEFORE BEING FOUND IN SUITCASE IN AFFLUENT CONNECTICUT TOWN, MOM SAYS

Sources told CBS New York the man arrested is Javier da Silva of Flushing, N.Y., who previously had a relationship with the victim. Da Silva is a native of Venezuela and “has been in the country illegally since overstaying his visa,” CBS reported, citing sources.

A source told the TV station the 24-year-old New Rochelle woman was “killed at her residence” and the ex-boyfriend “has made admissions to investigators.”

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York is handling the case.

Reyes was identified last week as the person whose body was found jammed into a piece of luggage abandoned in upscale Greenwich, Conn. Reyes’ cause of death was not immediately clear.

Reyes' mother, Norma Sanchez, said her daughter -- who reportedly battled depression and anxiety -- became paranoid shortly before disappearing. She was last seen Jan. 29 and reported missing the next day.

VALERIE REYES, GREENWICH MURDER VICTIM, DESCRIBED AS 'HOMEBODY' AND 'MOST GENTLE GIRL'

“She was very scared, very frightened,” Sanchez told the Rockland/Westchester Journal News. “She didn’t mention anything or no one specific. She just said, ‘I’m scared. I’m paranoid, mommy. I’m getting anxiety attacks.’ She was having a hard time talking.”

Though she reportedly never told her mom who she feared, Sanchez said Reyes was clear about what she feared, telling her mom: “’I’m afraid someone is going to murder me."

Said Sanchez: "We wonder, 'Who made her feel this way?'"

Reyes, who worked at a Barnes & Noble in Eastchester, N.Y., planned to train to become a tattoo artist and liked to sing.

A service is scheduled for Tuesday night in New Rochelle.

My sympathy goes out to this poor women's family. However, the story title should have read:

SHE was an illegal alien in a "Sanctuary City" and did not report him and cooperate with law enforcement.

They do NOT cooperate, they do not rat on each other, and sanctuary cities need to be outlawed!

Sanctuary cities do NOT make us more safe!

Prosecute the Governor's and Mayor's of these cities and states! They endanger all our lives!

    BOTH HERE ILLEGALLY!

    DEPORT THEM ALL!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

Authorities say suspect in suitcase death is in the country illegally

    Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, 5:06 p.m.
    Associated Press

A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and dumping her body in a suitcase in Connecticut is a citizen of Portugal who has been in the U.S. illegally for more than a year, federal authorities said Wednesday as the victim’s loved ones gathered for her funeral.

Javier Da Silva Rojas, who had been living in New York City, was taken into custody Monday and charged with kidnapping resulting in death in the killing of 24-year-old Valerie Reyes, of New Rochelle, N.Y. The charge carries the possibility of the death penalty.

Da Silva, also 24, entered the United States on May 8, 2017, through the Visa Waiver Program and was required to leave by Aug. 5, 2017, Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a statement.

The agency on Wednesday filed a detainer for Da Silva, meaning he will be deported immediately once his criminal case is complete and any sentence is served.

Susanne Brody, a lawyer for Da Silva, declined to comment Wednesday.

The Visa Waiver Program allows citizens from 38 countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. Of the nearly 22.5 million people who entered the country under the program and were supposed to leave in the 2017 fiscal year, about 131,000 remained in the country illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Also Wednesday, family and friends of Reyes attended her funeral at St. Gabriel’s Church in New Rochelle. They cried and hugged outside, with some wearing sweatshirts with her photo and wording saying, “In Loving Memory of our beautiful soul Valerie. You captured so many hearts.”

“She was just silly and just a free soul, beautiful soul. She’s going to be missed,” her cousin, Desiree Rodriguez, said Wednesday. “We’re devastated, but we’re happy that the person was caught so she gets to go in peace. It kind of brings us a little more peace, too, to let her go.”

Reyes was buried in a green casket adorned with flowers at a cemetery in nearby Rye, N.Y., as family and friends held white balloons.

Reyes worked at a bookstore and aspired to become a tattoo artist, co-workers and friends said. She was last seen on Jan. 29 and relatives reported her missing the next day. Town workers in Greenwich, Connecticut, found her body in a suitcase in a wooded area on Feb. 5.

Investigators focused on Da Silva after police said he used Reyes’ ATM card to withdraw cash multiple times after her death.

In a videotaped interview at the New Rochelle Police Department, Da Silva told investigators that Reyes fell to the floor and hit her head after they had sex on Jan. 29 at her home, federal authorities said. They said he indicated he put packing tape over her mouth, bound her legs and hands, and put her in a suitcase that he put in a forest after driving for some time.
