Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said President-elect Donald Trump will change much of the Obama administration’s immigration policy.
Kobach, known for his get-tough immigration policies, is part of the Trump transition team that’s focusing on immigration.
“In the case of President-elect Trump and President Obama, there will be a 180-degree turn in some policy, and one of those is immigration,” Kobach said.
He said he expects things to change fast for illegal immigrants with criminal records.
“If that person has committed additional crimes, in addition to their immigration violation, they should be very fearful they are on top of the list for deportation,” Kobach said.
He said he was invited to join the transition team a few months ago. The team is assigned to draw up a giant checklist of potential immigration changes. Kobach said he has definite ideas about a wall.
“A double wall. Thirty feet high. Where you have a high-speed border patrol vehicle road built in between the two walls,” Kobach said. “A physical wall is a force multiplier, like the one by San Diego.”
He said he expects the transition team will want Trump to rescind the immigration amnesty executive orders issued by President Obama, which provide a safe harbor for some of the 11 million illegals in the nation.
“I think every non-citizen who is illegally in the United States, in this country, needs to recognize that we have laws in this country and laws need to be enforced,” Kobach said.
The day after the election, Politico mentioned Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback as a potential Agriculture secretary. Brownback’s office isn’t saying much about that chatter, saying only that he’s concentrating on his current job of running Kansas.
Former Missouri Sen. Jim Talent has been mentioned as a possible candidate for Secretary of Defense.
The Trump transition team has about 10 weeks to pull together a new administration and start making changes in Washington.
