A simple seat belt check led to the arrest this weekend of two people alleged to be in the country illegally, according to the Cowley County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies stopped a vehicle at 3:34 p.m. Sunday in the 2000 block of K-15 for a seat belt violation, according to the sheriff's office weekend activity report.

After further investigation, they found that the driver, Rigoberto Toledo-Mendoza, 58, of Wichita, had a suspended driver's license.

He also was wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on a warrant for being a fugitive alien, the report states.

His passenger, Miriam Elizabeth Perez-Lopez, 50, of Wichita, also was wanted by ICE for an immigration violation, according to the sheriff's office.

Both were arrested and transported to the Cowley County Jail in Winfield.

They remained in jail Monday night with no bond and were being held for ICE.

The vehicle was turned over to a family friend, the report states.
