Kyl target of Dem election salvos

Kyl target of Dem election salvos
    Mar. 21, 2005 12:00 AM

Arizona's 2006 U.S. senatorial campaign is already revving up.

Latest indication: Phil Singer, formerly of New York Democrat Sen. Charles Schumer's Senate staff (now with the Schumer-chaired Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee), last week began blasting out e-mail news releases attacking the voting patterns of Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

Kyl's seat in the Senate is up for grabs next year. He'll be the target of a steady drumbeat of DSCC attacks.

But Republicans aren't sitting on their hands.

They've also been busy shopping around to reporters a National Republican Senatorial Committee-commissioned poll from early March that has Kyl with a significant early lead against a potential challenger, state Democratic Party Chairman Jim Pederson.

But such early claims can be deceiving. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in July 1999 had labeled Kyl as "the most vulnerable Republican incumbent" going into his 2000 campaign for a second Senate term. Kyl ended up being the only senator running that year without major-party opposition.

If Pederson does run against Kyl (he says a decision will come later this year), he'll be part of a statewide slate with Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano, who is also up for re-election.

    Letter to Gonzalez

Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., on Tuesday wrote to Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez asking for his assistance in monitoring the Minuteman Project, which plans to spend April patrolling the U.S.-Mexican border in southern Arizona.

"The Minutemen claim they will only be watching for undocumented immigrants; however, it is impossible to visually determine an individual's status, especially in the border region," Grijalva wrote.

"Inevitably," Grijalva warned, "untrained and likely armed volunteers will be confronting people they profile to be undocumented. The results of which can range from harassment of citizens to deadly altercations."

Grijalva advised Gonzalez that "your voice is needed now to make clear that private groups claiming law enforcement powers have no role in patrolling our border with Mexico."

Waaaah .... waaaaah .... waaaaaah, Senor! Didn't you read or ....maybe English is not your strong suit! You sniveled: "The Minutemen claim they will only be watching for undocumented immigrants; however, it is impossible to visually determine an individual's status, especially in the border region"

Senor .. you silly fellow! .. if they're in the border region they are most likely illegal. You know ... crossing the desert .. that sort of thing. They're not just out for a nature hike. But, of course, you knew that, you silly fellow! You just want a better life for "your people."

And I must comment on this too, Senor! ""Inevitably," Grijalva warned, "untrained and likely armed volunteers will be confronting people they profile to be undocumented. The results of which can range from harassment of citizens to deadly altercations."

Again, Senor, you amaze even me! The MinuteMen have repeatedly said they will have NO CONTACT with the illegals they encounter!

Finally, Senor, you said "Grijalva advised Gonzalez that "your voice is needed now to make clear that private groups claiming law enforcement powers have no role in patrolling our border with Mexico."

Senor, my name is certainly not Fox-ee but I can see the Fox-ee in your comment. Again, Senor, you amaze me with your sly style. Jes lyke a fox! You just want "your people" to continue to illegally invade America, that's all. We can read between the lines, ya know.

So much venom against a group that is merely watching and observing. It's amazing the lengths the OBL will go to so the American public won't find out what's really going on at our borders.

Excuse me, but if you are crossing the border in the desert and not at a properly designated checkpoint, then you are either an illegal or an idiot, in either event we do not want you in the country.

At least Senator Kyl has some guts. A commodity that seems to be in short supply in Washington and in many states.
