Characterizing it as "stupid," L.A. County Supervisor Mike Antonovich has criticized a proposal by two colleagues to have the county government boycott Arizona over the state's crackdown on illegal immigration.
"This knee-jerk reaction to support lawbreakers at the expense of law-abiding legal immigrants and other residents is irresponsible," Antonovich said in a statement.
Supervisor Gloria Molina introduced a motion Wednesday that would authorize the county to boycott Arizona unless it suspends or repeals its controversial immigration law. The motion, which was co-sponsored by Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, would direct county officials to suspend all travel to Arizona and investigate withdrawing county investments and canceling contracts. The city of Los Angeles approved a boycott of Arizona a few weeks ago.
On Wednesday, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck spoke out against the Arizona law, expressing his concerns in Washington to Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. Beck said "legislation like this inhibits us from doing our jobs" and would deter immigrants from reporting crimes, either as victims or witnesses. "The fear of the police already inhibits immigrants from coming forward to a certain extent," Beck said. "But if you add this, you increase the reluctance tenfold."
