L.A. Sheriff's Deputy Shot by Mexican National

UPDATED: Off-duty deputy involved in shoot-out on 60 Freeway in South
El MonteSuspect wounded in face; deputy unhurt

SOUTH EL MONTE -- An off-duty sheriff's deputy shot a man in the face Friday after the two engaged in a gun battle on the 60 Freeway, sheriff's officials said.

Armando Gonzalez, a 25-year-old believed to be a Mexican national living in Maywood, was being held at a hospital on suspicion of attempted murder, Los Angeles County sheriff's officials said.

The deputy, whose name was not released Saturday, was driving home about 2:20 p.m. on the eastbound freeway at Santa Anita Avenue when the suspect pulled alongside him in a Ford Expedition and "motioned to the deputy," Capt. Michael Parker said in a written statement.

"The deputy motioned back as if to ask what the suspect wanted," Parker said.

He then saw the suspect reach down, and accelerated away from the Expedition fearing that the suspect may be arming himself, the captain said.

"The suspect again caught up along the left side of the deputy's car, pulled out a handgun and fired at the deputy," Parker said.

"The deputy was forced to fire back after the suspect to save his life," Lt. John Hocking said.

Investigators said the deputy managed to maneuver away from the suspect and pull over on the side of the freeway.

While the deputy was stopped along the roadway, Gonzalez pulled up behind him and again opened fire, officials said.

The suspect, who was shot in the face in one of the exchanges, then exited the freeway and pulled over.

California Highway Patrol dispatchers received several calls from witnesses reporting the shoot-out, and soon after, sheriff's officials received calls that a man was standing near a vehicle with blood on his shirt.
The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition, Parker said, and a handgun was found in his car.

The deputy, who is assigned to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles, was not hurt, authorities said.

"With all evidence right now, investigators believe (Gonzalez) is from Mexico and not a U.S. citizen," Hocking said. "They're basing that on items they found in the car."

Gonzalez remained hospitalized Saturday in critical condition, Hocking said.

According to sheriff's booking records, he was being held in lieu of $1 million bail. No information was available regarding his initial court appearance.

The illegals are turning California into the wild west. If you plan on visiting L.A. anytime soon, you better go prepared to defend your life.

I'm glad the LEO is ok, don't really care about the Mexican National... he took his life in his own hands and he signed his own death warrant. I know that sounds cold, but I am sick and tired of the abuse we are expected to "tolerate" at the hands of illegals.

What in the world?! Was it an attempted hit on the Deputy? I hope they get to the bottom of what this was all about, the Deputy is very lucky he wasn't killed or seriously injured. I wonder who is paying the hospital bills for the illegal alien?

Agree but we have an elitist government who believe they know best and certainly they in there controlled environment do not suffer the effect of illegals, simply the gov is more concerned over what is PC more then the American taxpayer one only need to look at the TSA too understand that.

Three groups gain from illegals, Mexican gov. our gov. and the business people who want huge profits and subsidized labor once we put these business people in jail only then will immigration slow or stop.

Mandatory jail sentence for anyone hiring an illegal will change the problem over night but I won't hold my breath.

I agree with the mandatory jail. Employers also say they don't have ways to know if a potential hire is illegal and yah its partly true. But why not ask for a copy of ones BC and to see the legal copy as well? Now some will say they can't do that which is only half true... that can't do that.... unless they do it for everyone. So why not, want to work for my business this is what WE require to obtain a job.

An employer can set their own standards as strict as they wish as long as it applies to everyone. An employer could require a copy of ones BC or Passport, along with ones SS and state ID/DL, along with even requiring a background check paid for by the potential employee. Hell, an employer could even have it in the contract that any employee believed to be an illegal who refuses to show proof of status can be terminated within 72 hours of request of proof of legal capacity to work. It could even be stated all legal fee's and costs associated with would be the responsibility of the employee if such came to a conclusion.

The only catch is the standards have to apply to all employee's. Employers can basically write their own contracts in their own interests as long as they don't discriminate vs age, race, or sex and set same standards for all.

The shooter might have recognized the deputy from the jail.
And maybe he had been deported from the jail since the L.A. County Jail has been a 287g agency since 2005.

It might have been because he recognized the deputy from his job in the jail
or it might have been road rage.
