La Raza Praises 11 House Republicans Who 'Stood with DREAMers'

Mark Amodei (R-NV); Mike Coffman (R-CO); Jeff Denham (R-CA); Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL); Cory Gardner (R-CO); Joe Heck (R-NY); Adam Kinzinger (R-IL); Rep. Dave Reichert (R-WA); Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL); Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI); and Rep. David Valadao (R-CA).

After Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) emphasized that Obama's Deferred Action program has lured more illegal immigrant juveniles from Central America, and said that a bill that enables Obama to enact more amnesty should not pass, House Republicans rejected the original border bill. House leaders had to pull the bill last Thursday and then call its members back from recess to cobble together a compromise that was palatable to conservatives. On Friday evening, the House finally passed its border bills.

Reps. Coffman, Gardner buck party on immigration

DENVER - Colorado Republican Representatives Mike Coffman and Cory Gardner both voted Friday to maintain a measure created by President Barack Obama granting work permits to immigrants brought here illegally as kids.

The two Congressman - both seeking re-election in a state with a large Hispanic population - went against party leadership in the House.

The measure was a companion bill to legislation passed by the House late Friday to address the crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border by sending migrant youths back home without hearings.

The spending bill passed 223-189 late Friday, with only four Republicans voting "no" and one Democrat voting "yes." The measure ending Obama's deportation relief program passed 216-192, with Coffman and Gardner joining nine other Republicans in voting "no." Four Democrats crossed party lines to vote in favor of the bill.

In a statement released to the media Friday, Coffman urged both parties to work together on the immigration issue:

While I oppose unilateral action and executive overreach by the President, I am voting no because I think the Congress missed an opportunity to pass DACA into law. Kids who grew up here, know of no other country, and were brought here through no fault of their own, deserve our compassion and an opportunity to earn a path to citizenship. I urge both parties to work together and find a path down the middle to fix our broken immigration system.

Democratic challenger Andrew Romanoff released the following statement:

We're glad to see Congressman Coffman follow Andrew Romanoff's lead. It's a shame that it took a strong opponent and a tough election to get the congressman to reverse his votes for the moment and suspend his attack on DACA. If Mr. Coffman means what he now says, we urge him to join Andrew in calling for urgent action to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

Rep. Kinzinger’s(R-IL) Lame Excuse For Voting Against Blackburn’s DACA Bill

On Friday evening the House of Representatives passed a bill authored by Tennessee congresswoman Marsha Blackburn that would keep President Obama from continuing or expanding his DACA executive amnesty program.

DACA, Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals, was an executive order issued by President Obama in the summer of 2012 that granted amnesty to up to 1 million illegal immigrants that had been brought to the United States as children by their parents.

Blackburn’s DACA bill, H.R. 5272 would prohibit the federal government from making modifications to Obama’s original amnesty granting executive order that would expand the number of illegal immigrants eligable for it, the bill would also stop any authorization of any new deferred deportations, and would prohibit those illegal aliens from being able to work within the US.

11 House Republicans would vote against the bill, however as Roll Call reports not a one of them took to the House floor to explain why they were against Blackburn’s bill which was viewed as a necessary component to the House passing any legislation to address the flood of illegal immigrants from Central America crossing into Texas in the Rio Grande Valley.

Not every Republican voted “yes” on the bill on Friday night, but dissenters did not speak up on the House floor during debate. They chose instead to voice their frustrations in conversations with colleagues outside the parameters of the chamber, saying the decision to hold the vote was not politically advisable but stopping short of using the stormy rhetoric of their Democratic counterparts.

The challenge for some Republicans during this debate was that they agree that Obama has overstepped his constitutional bounds, but they support the general concept that the Dreamers should have some protections against deportation and pathways to legal status.

The 11 Republicans who voted to allow the continuation of Obama’s amnesty via executive fiat and leaves wide open the possibility that Obama will grant more amnesty by executive order are: Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Jeff Denham (R-CA), Cory Gardner (R-CO), Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), David Reichert (R-WA), David Valadao (R-CA), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Joe Heck (R-NV), Fred Upton (R-MI), Mark Amodei (R-NV), and Mike Coffman (R-CO).

Over the weekend Illinois congressman Adam Kinzinger’s spokesman, Zach Hunter, told Illinois Review why the man viewed as the “Young John McCain” voted against Blackburn’s DACA bill:

Congressman Kinzinger supported the original House language to curtail the administration’s deferred action program and has previously voted twice to repeal or defund it. However, last minute changes in legislative language were poorly constructed and would have made our already broken immigration system more confusing and inefficient.

So let me get this straight putting an end to Obama’s lawlessness and blocking him from doing what fellow Illinois congressman Lois Gutierrez has been begging Obama to do for months(grant amnesty to millions more illegals) would make our immigration system more confusing and inefficient.

Sorry not buying it.

It has been Obama’s abuse of his office, the granting of DACA amnesty in the first place, that has prompted many of the estimated 60,000 illegal immigrant minors to come here in the first place putting an enormous strain on the system.

The much more believable reasoning for why congressman Kinzinger voted against Blackburn’s bill is because he’s a supporter of “comprehensive immigration reform” i.e. amnesty.

In April Kinzinger and fellow Illinois Republican Aaron Schock each cut videos for a big gathering in Chicago put on by former Speaker of the House Denny Hastert that drew plenty of big names from both the GOP establishment and big business that was focused around one thing, Amnesty.

Kinzinger’s vote against Blackburn’s bill to stop more executive amnesty is even more troubling considering that in the days leading up to the vote Kinzinger was asking his constituents via social media for their input on what should be done about the immigration crisis and the overwhelming response he was given was that those here illegally had to be sent back to their country of origin.

Aaron Schock, Adam Kinzinger to back legal status

Two House Republicans from Illinois are endorsing some sort of legal status for immigrants in the country illegally, adding renewed GOP support for immigration reform efforts that have come to a standstill on Capitol Hill.

The statements from Illinois GOP Reps. Aaron Schock and Adam Kinzinger come in twin video testimonials that will be aired during an event this afternoon in Chicago with former House Speaker Dennis Hastert — a rally meant to push fellow Republicans toward an immigration overhaul. The videos were provided to POLITICO in advance of Tuesday’s event, hosted by the Illinois Business Immigration Coalition.

“Quite frankly, I think if a man or a woman likes their American job, wherever they were born, they should be able to keep that job,” Schock says in the video. “We need a clear path to citizenship for workers who are already here and a fair and efficient on-ramp for those who want to come here.”

Schock, who has expressed support for a pathway to citizenship before, made the economic case for reforming the immigration system, arguing that various industries throughout Illinois — such as agriculture — face serious hurdles in trying to hire immigrant workers legally.

And though Kinzinger doesn’t explicitly endorse a shot at citizenship for those in the United States illegally, he called for a way to find a legal status for them.

“We must work hard to come to an agreement on how to bring undocumented workers out of the shadows, legally entering the work force and becoming part of the American melting pot that makes this country great,” Kinzinger says in his testimonial. “However, if we do not adequately secure our borders, we could be facing these same problems a few years down the road, which is why this must be the first step of the reform process.”

Kinzinger, a veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, also argues that for young undocumented immigrants who want to serve in the military, “we should thank them with legal status.” That debate has become especially charged in recent weeks with California Republican Rep. Jeff Denham’s effort to include a measure that would allow that in the must-pass defense authorization bill.

While the comments do indicate still some appetite for immigration reform within the House GOP ranks, the broader conference remains largely opposed to taking up an overhaul of immigration laws this year and is still deeply divided on some of the policy fundamentals, including what to do with millions of immigrants who are in the country illegally.

Chances remain low that the Republican-led House will take up immigration reform this year, but Tuesday’s event in Chicago is an effort to try to change that. Key Illinois GOP political figures including Hastert, gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner and two former governors — Jim Edgar and James Thompson — will appear with several Illinois business leaders to pressure their fellow Republicans to do immigration reform.
