Utah: Republicans Postpone Opinions On New Guest Worker Law

PROVO β€” Utah County Republicans on Saturday postponed discussion about a potential resolution that would oppose the alleged unconstitutional provisions of HB116, Utah's guest worker legislation.

The proposed resolution, which calls on lawmakers to repeal the law and, in turn, uphold the Constitution and the party's approved platform of beliefs, was slated for next month's executive committee meeting, when

leadership says a panel of legislators can be there to field questions.
Members of the party expressed concern for not having enough time to not only read over the lengthy resolution, but to consider its implications, according to Utah County Republican Stan Lockhart.

He said "it could not be covered in 15 minutes," as was proposed by an unsuccessful motion to add the item to Saturday's agenda.

Other members of the party have said the resolution, as it is written, is too harsh and that it needs to be "toned down" before consideration.

The goal of the resolution β€” which contains information about what HB116 does, the party's platform planks and proposed action to be taken β€” is to encourage the party to take a stand in defense of its platform, which supports "efforts to enforce the law while welcoming immigrants who enter America through legal avenues," among other things, according to a draft copy of the resolution.

Keri Witte, a Utah County Republican and author of the resolution, says HB116 violates many tenets of the Utah County Republican Party's platform. The resolution asks that lawmakers work to bring the law into conformity with the United States Constitution and federal law, and with the county, state, and national Republican platforms, or repeal the law entirely.

"This resolution would not denounce our elected officials," Witte clarified Saturday, adding that she wants the opportunity to discuss the issues surrounding the unconstitutionality of HB116.

The Salt Lake County Republican Central Committee on Thursday night voted to approve its own resolution, saying that providing amnesty for immigrants committing identity theft "is the wrong thing to do," said Larry Jensen, a member of the Salt Lake Republican Party.

"It goes way too far," he told the Deseret News Saturday. "HB116 does not penalize the felony crime of identity theft and that is not something we can't provide amnesty on or pardon them from doing."

Jensen said his party's resolution calls for repeal of the bill, but it is basically a statement from the party, not meant to rebuke lawmakers who voted for the bill but rather to denounce the votes in favor of it.

Other county parties in the state are also considering the resolution or one similar to it. The group fighting for repeal of the law aims to have a website containing information on the matter, online sometime next week.

I do not understand why a lawsuit is not in the works for a State that creates its own guest workers laws. Arizona State is being sued for trying to enact laws that would control undocumented aliens increasing crimes and unlawful enteries into the U.S.?

    Strange actions.

A guest worker program, if approved, can easily be abused and create a mafia of illegal alien contraband. Sounds like Utah is playing both sides of the issue by trying to please its illegal population and representatives and then later roadblocking the law they've just passed, thus creating and impasse. These actions buy time until 2012. In the meantime, illegals continue to have a large presence in the state and employers continue to give them jobs, especially on the west side of Salt Lake City and other poorer areas.

It is a complete nightmare for all Americans, I must express.
