Canadian Citizen Arrested by Border Patrol for Illegal Entry after Stealing a Canadian Fishing Vessel

Release Date: May 26, 2020

Steuben, Maine: U.S. Border Patrol Agents, with assistance from U.S Coast Guard, arrested a Canadian citizen aboard a stolen fishing vessel near Pigeon Hill Bay on Monday morning. The Canadian citizen stole the vessel from Grand Manan Island in the Canadian Province of New Brunswick and fled toward Maine.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. on Monday, May 25, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) requested assistance from U.S. law enforcement agencies to apprehend a stolen fishing vessel that was last reported heading toward the United States from Canadian waters. A short time later fishermen reported seeing the vessel in Pigeon Hill Bay. This information was confirmed by the Washington County Sherriff’s Office.

A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew and Border Patrol Agents from the Calais Station responded to the location to board the vessel. The sole occupant of the vessel—a Canadian citizen—was arrested and taken into custody by Border Patrol Agents. An additional search of the vessel by a Border Patrol K9 and the U.S Coast Guard found no additional subjects or contraband onboard.

“This event highlights some of the key partnerships that we rely upon to achieve our border security mission here in Maine,” said Jason Schneider, Acting Chief Patrol Agent of the Border Patrol in Maine. “First, the willingness of the public to report suspicious activity in the border area and second, the combined effort and cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies. We rely on these individual partners to serve as a force multipliers for us, without them it would be nearly impossible to achieve the situational awareness needed to ensure the safety of our communities in Maine.”

The Canadian citizen was expelled from the United States under Title 42 USC 265, suspension of entries and imports from designated places to prevent spread of communicable diseases. Upon his return to Canada through the Ferry Point Port of Entry in Calais, Maine, the Canadian citizen was turned over to RCMP.

The U.S. Border Patrol in Maine relies on the cooperation and assistance of the public. Anyone wishing to make a confidential report of suspicious activity may call (800) 851-8727 to contact the United States Border Patrol in Maine.
