Members of the Los Zetas Cartel managed to establish a series of large scale marijuana plantations in east Texas. Authorities have been able to locate 15 marijuana plantations and seize 77,000 plants with an estimated worth of more than $101 million.

The marijuana growing operation has been tied to the Los Zetas drug cartel, information released by the Smith County Sheriff’s Office revealed. The efforts to take down the growing operation began on July 28, 2015 under Operation Joint Venture when authorities found three growing operations and seized 22,000 plants. The operation was carried out by Smith County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

As part of the investigation, authorities were able to identify Eduardo Ramirez Pineda as the leader of the Los Zetas marijuana growing operation and Benito Ramirez as his right hand man.

Authorities have obtained an arrest warrant for him and 11 other members of the Los Zetas group for their alleged role in the operation; most of the members have been identified as Mexican nationals.

Authorities were able to arrest three of the wanted men this week and continue to search for the others. During the arrest, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained several other individuals on apparent immigration violations.

Los Zetas have a history of establishing marijuana growing operations in Texas. In April 2015, Breitbart Texas reported on a $2 million Los Zetas marijuana operation in Laredo, Texas. At the time, Webb County Martin Cuellar told a local news outlet that the operation was not tied to Los Zetas; a claim that was since dis-proven.

In August 2014, two illegal aliens were arrested by federal authorities after they set up a marijuana growing operation linked to the Gulf Cartel in Willacy County, Breitbart Texas reported at the time. The seizure came by chance when U.S. Border Patrol agents were chasing a group of 14 illegal immigrants through the Texas brush and encountered the growing operation. By September 2015, 22-year-old Miguel Echevarria Guisar and his father, 51-year-old Miguel Echevarria Zuniga, were both sentenced to prison for their role in the operation. The son was sentenced to three years in prison while his father was sentenced to three and a half years. Both men face deportation after their terms are served.

77,000 plants in Texas, operated by a mexican drug cartel - plants take at least a full growing season to produce; which means they are operating long term WITHOUT HINDRANCE. This is America - what are mexican drug cartels doing here and all across our nation w/o the boot out royally? How can the DEA have maps of cartels' territory east/west coast w/o REMOVING THEM?? why are they still here?????

Who owns the land that these growing operations are found on?

This reminds me of similar problems here in Californian where huge grow operations were found inside homes that took up the entire home. Every part of the living space was filled with the growing operations. The illegals who build these houses have an inside track to identify houses available and an interest in applying the housing market to make available these growing spaces.

Yes, how could this many plants be growing and no one notice?

Smith county is not an isolated area. There are lots of pine trees, but it isn't isolated swamp, mountainous or desert land.

Plenty knew. This is what I mean about the drug money going all the way to the top. Someone was protecting this -

There are a lot of illegals in that part of Texas, many brought there by the poultry industry. That drew many more.

The large number of illegals gives cover to those coming here to do this and other illegal things.

We need to stop and think who benefits from this.

I'm sure if we just give it some real thought we could come up with the people who benefit and facilitate this.

Exactly. Illegal immigration is not about cheap chicken, it's about illegal drugs.

Who knew? Who benefited? But the people who owned the land should be the first people who ought to know. Who owns the land these grows are found on?

Yes, who owns the land - I agree.

However, I firmly believe people whose job it is to enforce our laws are culpable in this and this, to me, is the most heinous.

We wouldn't have 30 million or more of these people in our country if the vast majority of those who are supposed to defend Americans from this aren't on the take and directly involved with perpetuating illegal immigration. And, it's all for drug money. Politicians and yes sadly quite a number of different groups within law enforcement are part of this scam against our country and citizens.

It read some more on this, and it seems it is not just Smith County but several others. I believe the total of plants was for all counties.

I'm just guessing, but it could be absentee land owners, employing illegals, or illegals who operate the chicken farms. Pure conjecture -

It seems at least a couple were complicit landowners - probably more.

In East Texas, two poultry companies are responsible for the huge influx of illegals in the area. One is more responsible for that part of Texas.

After filling the area with illegals, they (actually one man ran this one)the majority was then sold to a Brazilian firm. So, realize we, the American taxpayers are responsible for caring for these people who have jobs that were being done by Americans, but we are doing it for a Brazilian company.

Pilgrim's Pride had also built a huge World Headquarters in the area. Evidently the Brazilians didn't want to take on that monstrosity.

So === this building was unloaded on the Texas Dept of Education for Region 8 center.
