PHOENIX -- The Arizona Department of Public Safety was involved in a pair of traffic stops Tuesday morning involving the discovery of several people that may be illegal immigrants.

DPS spokesman Sgt. Kevin Wood told The Associated Press on Tuesday morning that officers pulled over a truck and arrested the driver at 6:15 a.m., however, seven people ran from the vehicle and are still on the loose near Loop 202 (San Tan Freeway) and McClintock Drive.

A second stop on the eastbound Loop 202 (San Tan Freeway) and Kyrene Road resulted in the driver plus 10 suspected illegal immigrants being taken into custody.

Some of the people found were trying to hide in the back of a truck under what appears to be carpet.

Federal immigration officials are at the scene.

13 suspected illegal immigrants found in truck off Interstate 10

    Apr. 1, 2010 07:54 AM
    Associated Press

A police stop early Thursday morning in west Phoenix led to the capture of 13 suspected illegal immigrants.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Kevin Wood said DPS received a call about a broken down vehicle shortly before 6 a.m. Units arrived at the 83rd Avenue and I-10 off ramp and found a broken down Ford pickup truck with a sheet of plywood covering the bed.

Officers found eight suspected illegal immigrants hiding under the wood.

Five people in the cab of the truck were also detained. All are believed to be in the U.S. illegally.

The 13 are all adults and will be handed over to immigration authorities.

How long they were in the U.S. and where they were from is not yet known

More than 25 suspected illegal immigrants found in 2 traffic stops

    The Republic | azcentral.com

Two traffic stops along Interstate 10 Friday morning led to the discovery of more than 25 suspected illegal immigrants, authorities said.

Department of Public Safety officers pulled the first vehicle over about 5:30 a.m. near I-10 and Baseline Road, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said.

Fifteen people, including a pregnant woman, fled from the vehicle and were located and detained nearby at Arizona Mills Mall.

About an hour later, another officer attempted to pull over a pick up on I-10 near Ray Road, but the vehicle refused to yield. It continued to Chandler Boulevard, where it exited, with the driver heading the wrong way on a dirt road beside the freeway on ramp, Graves said.

Four people in the cab of the truck, including the driver, fled but were located and detained at a nearby Denny's restaurant. Officers found 13 more people, including two juveniles, hidden beneath plywood panels in the back of the truck.

The driver of each vehicle is expected to face human smuggling charges, Graves said. The other suspects will be handed to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
