CHICAGO (AP) - The Republican candidates for Illinois governor say they support a law allowing immigrants living in the U.S. illegally to get driver's licenses.

State Sen. Bill Brady and Kirk Dillard, businessman Bruce Rauner and Treasurer Dan Rutherford were asked about the new law during a debate Tuesday in Chicago. The Legislature approved the measure last year.

Brady says he originally opposed the legislation but changed his mind after recognizing that immigrants aren't likely to leave the U.S. He says the law ensures if those immigrants are driving they have been trained.

Dillard and Rauner say they support it because law enforcement and insurance agencies say it's a good idea and will make Illinois roads safer.

Rutherford says if he's elected governor he won't try to overturn the law.
