    Illegal immigration's effects being felt

    Illegal immigration's effects being felt
Aubrey Guiney| Letter to the Editor

    Friday, February 01, 2008

Regarding Harold Szerlip's letter to the editor ("Illegal immigration foes are bigots," Jan. 2, I find it astounding that there are people who think the primary reason for the outcry against illegal immigration is bigotry.

I work in the construction industry as a subcontractor, and in the past year I have watched nearly every trade be replaced with illegal immigrants. The first group to have felt the effects of the illegals is the black community. I have had several of my black colleagues who owned and operated successful businesses in such trades as brick masons, concrete workers, framers, etc., be displaced by this invasion of illegal immigrants.

If Dr. Szerlip were to actually talk to one of these immigrants he would discover that they do not care to become citizens of this country, unlike my own ancestors who came here and never looked back.

They are here for no other reason than to earn American dollars to send back to their country of origin, and then return home once they have earned enough money to retire, all at the expense of our indigenous work force.

I pay my employees wages on which they can support their families on their own and do not depend on the state for subsidies, unlike the illegal work force that not only takes our jobs, but then their families also take our welfare money that would otherwise be used for our own impoverished and elderly.

I wait for the inevitable day that my company will no longer be able to compete with the ridiculously low bids from the illegal work force that will put me and all 10 of my employees out of work and put our families on the welfare system, just like what is happening to so many others.

Illegal immigration affects all of us directly or indirectly.

I hope Dr. Szerlip pays a lot in taxes, because my employees and I are going to need it soon!

I would report any contractor who you suspect is operating without state licensing to the appropriate authorities in your state. This may be a Builder's Board, Construction Contractor's board, or similar. Profile them if you need to--- a private citizen can get away with that--but make sure your complaint has reasonably accurate information. You don't want to waste the government's--and taxpayers--time and money.

The humanitarian arguments for tolerating illegal immigration are extremely thin. The economic arguments are very outdated and reveal gross ignorance of how a dynamic economy changes and grows. The tolerance for illegal immigration amounts to little more than another means of grasping for votes and political power.

right on captainron-the same economic arguements were the same to have slavery, not l have child labor laws, against 40 hr weeks,no minimum wage, forced labor camps in the north in the late 1800's,allowing women to vote and work, etc .All were wrong and were to make the rich, richer
