    Layoff signal turbulent times
Heath E. Combs , ENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER TRIAD - The recent spate of textile layoffs this week in North Carolina has some saying it's just the first trickle in an upcoming flood.
"The chickens are coming home to roost, from a decade of neglect of our flawed trade policy " said Jim Schollaert, director of Senate relations for the American Manufacturing Trade Action Coalition.
"And if we want to keep the chickens we have left, we better get political and act fast," Schollaert said.
Economists have predicted that during the next several years the state textile industry would lose another 10,000 to 15,000 of the its current 100,000 jobs, due to the end of import quotas on Jan. 1.
Schollaert said the biggest looming threat is the Central American Free Trade Agreement. If passed, he said, more jobs will be lost in North Carolina.
The agreement would remove trade barriers between the U.S. and five Central American countries plus the Dominican Republic.
Rep. Mel Watt, D-12th, said he met with Sara Lee Corp. officials Wednesday to discuss CAFTA. Sara Lee favors passage of the agreement.
"They believe that failure to pass CAFTA will increase the likelihood of layoffs, and passage will decrease the likelihood of layoffs," he said.
Watt said many supporters of CAFTA believe if it does not pass, China will gain an even stronger manufacturing presence in the Western Hemisphere.
Rep. Howard Coble, R-6th, described this week's textile job cuts in North Carolina as "painful."
"We're still working on the safeguard issue, and I think we've got good cooperation from Commerce and the administration," he said.
Coble said he still hasn't made a decision for or against CAFTA, one reason being that strong support falls on both sides of the issue in his district.

In this instance, it's simple. Just stop buying Mexican goods. If the tag says Mexico, go ahead, make a sacrifice, pay a dollar more for something else even if the quality isn't as good. Most of us already have done that to some degree with France. For example, recently, I refused to buy $500 worth of French Michelin tires made in Canada and bought $500 worth of Italian Pirelli tires made in CA. Mexico now makes similarly large items mostly for sale here. Make the sacrifice. Vicente understands money, boy does he ever.

NO CAFTA!!!! NADA.....Not one new trade agreement UNTIL we find out what the heck is going on.....these Beanheads can not be trusted....WHY would anyone in North Carolina support CAFTA when it means THOUSANDS OF JOBS LOST HERE TO......Central America?

I mean....isn't El Salvador in Central America? Isn't that where the MS-13 GANGS came from?

Why would Americans be willing to sacrifice jobs to help a region that sent their thugs, gangsters, murderers, butchers...to kill and terrorize our communities, schools, sidewalks, neighborhoods....

No American wants to reward a region that did that....WHAT AMERICAN WOULD WANT TO DO THAT??

Only Anti-Americans would want to do that....

    CAFTA SUPPORTERS ARE TRAITORS!!

    Plain and simple.
