At Least 37 Dead After Fire Engulfs U.S. – Mexico Border Migrant Facility

by SIMON KENT 28 Mar 2023

A deadly fire engulfed a migrant processing centre at Ciudad Juárez on the U.S.-Mexico border early Tuesday morning with local reports saying at least 37 people died in the blaze and dozens more were left injured.

Two local government rescue sources told Reuters news agency of the death toll which is expected to grow throughout the day.

The facility is located near the Stanton International Bridge, which links Ciudad Juarez to El Paso, Texas.

Although authorities have not yet released official reports, the El Diario and El Heraldo have also reported that at least 37 people were killed, according to the Daily Mail.

Another 40 people were believed to have been evacuated from the area and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Footage from the scene showed soldiers and firefighters helping the injured to safety from inside a building at the National Migration Institute.

The fire broke out shortly before midnight, prompting the mobilization of firefighters and dozens of ambulances.

Ciudad Juarez, which neighbors El Paso, Texas, is one of the border towns where undocumented migrants wait before trying to cross into the U.S. as Breitbart News reported.

There has been no official statement about what may have caused the blaze but local newspapers reported there had been a disturbance inside the centre just before the fire, the BBC reports.

Photographs released by Reuters show a number of bodies covered in foil blankets lying outside the building.

Mexico’s attorney general’s office has launched a inquiry and has investigators at the scene, according to media reports.

At least 39 people were killed at a migrant center in the northern Mexico city of Ciudad Juarez after migrants there set fire to a mattress, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said.

They said the fire broke out at the National Migration Institute Office after authorities picked up more than 70 migrants from the streets of Ciudad Juarez, CNN reported.

The migrants started the fire because they feared being deported, the president said. In total, 39 people died and 29 are injured in "delicate-serious" conditions, the National Migration Institute said, according to The Associated Press.

The victims are all men from Central and South America who were being held in the center when the fire broke out, the agency said.

The fire comes as record numbers of illegal migrants have been coming to the United States. Ciudad Juarez is a major border crossing point, just across the border from El Paso, Texas, and the shelters there are full of migrants waiting to enter the United States.

Load every one of them up on buses and send them back home!

USA does not want this violence and destruction in our country.

Stop sheltering them, stop feeding them, stop giving them money! Send them back to their president.

Fatal Mexican Detention Center Fire near U.S. Border Set by Protesting Migrants

Fatal Mexican Detention Center Fire near U.S. Border Set by Protesting Migrants

by ILDEFONSO ORTIZ and BRANDON DARBY 28 Mar 2023

Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced Tuesday that 39 migrants died during a fire at a detention center in Ciudad Juarez. The president said detained migrants started the fire during a protest after the group learned they were going to be deported.

The incident took place on Monday night shortly after 9:30 p.m. at a detention facility run by Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM). The fire began when a group of migrants became agitated and stacked sleeping mats by the door and set them ablaze.

What the INM statement does not reveal is why their national monitoring system, which has several cameras inside, did not alert authorities about the fire or the protests when they first began. As Breitbart Texas reported, INM has a state-of-the-art monitoring center with thousands of cameras that are hooked up to all of the detention centers and facilities. That center has been plagued with allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
