Police: Men got cash, hat in armed robbery

Coralville police have two suspects in custody after an armed robbery Sunday.


According to police, two suspects entered Valparaiso Western Wear, 212 1st Ave., tried on boots and clothing, then displayed knives and demanded money from the cash register. The men fled with an undetermined amount of cash and a hat. No one was injured in the robbery.


An investigation resulted in the arrests of Jose Leonardo Jordan-Murcia, 17, of 1205 Laura Drive #28, Iowa City and Rogelio Escabar-Fernandez, AKA Joe Vargas, 23, of 1205 Laura Drive #133, Iowa City. Both were arrested at their residences.


Jordan-Murcia made a full confession to his involvement in the crime, according to a police report.


Both are initially charged with 1st degree robbery, a class-B felony. They remain in the Johnson County Jail on $50,000 cash bond and Immigration and Customs Enforcement hold orders. Additional charges are pending.


The Iowa City Police Department, University of Iowa Department of Public Safety and The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
