Outbound Operation at Calexico Downtown Port Results in $300,000 Seized

    (Tuesday, August 04, 2009)

Calexico, Calif. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and Border Patrol agents conducting outbound operations over the weekend adjacent to the Calexico downtown port seized $309,580 in unreported U.S. currency leaving the United States, officials announced today.

The seizure occurred at about 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 2, when CBP officers and Border Patrol agents referred a grey 2004 Dodge Durango driven by a 28-year-old male Mexican resident of Hialeah, Fla., to the secondary examination area for further inspection.

At the secondary examination area, the driver gave a negative declaration for currency in excess of $10,000, weapons or ammunition. During the secondary interview, the officer noticed signs of nervousness being displayed by the driver which prompted the intensive inspection. The intensive inspection led CBP officers to the discovery of 21 bundles of U.S. currency in zip lock bags concealed in a non-factory compartment underneath the vehicle’s rear seats.

The driver, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, was arrested and turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for further investigation.

CBP seized both the currency and vehicle.

“The coordinated work of CBP officers and Border Patrol agents in this significant seizure shows the positive impact that these outbound inspection operations can have,â€

Hopefully followed by DEPORTATION! Somebody carrying that much cash was working for the drug cartels, and we damn sure don't need them here.
