Homeless man gets 5 years in slaying of drinking buddy

A homeless man who beat another homeless man to death with a rock a year ago will spend the next five years in prison.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Edgar Acuña on Tuesday sentenced Tranquillino Hernandez-Alvarado, 24, to prison after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the May 2006 beating death of Jerry Wayne Walding, 54.
Deputy County Attorney Daniel Nicolini said Hernandez-Alvarado and Walding were with another homeless man drinking beer in a wash near South Kino Parkway and East Benson Highway.
Walding hit Hernandez-Alvarado with his 40-ounce bottle of beer, which prompted Hernandez-Alvarado to beat him with a rock, Nicolini said.
Hernandez-Alvarado was charged with first-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. In a presentence report, however, Hernandez-Alvarado told a probation officer he intended to kill Walding.
Acuña also sentenced Hernandez-Alvarado to a concurrent term of 1.5 years for having a homemade weapon in the Pima County Jail. Hernandez-Alvarado told the probation officer he made the weapon to kill his cellmate, according to the presentence report.
After Hernandez-Alvarado is released from prison, he faces deportation to Mexico, Nicolini said.
