Four jugs of liquid cocaine are discovered at the San Ysidro border crossing.

SAN YSIDRO — A man from El Salvador was arrested Tuesday after customs officers thwarted an attempt to smuggle 71 pounds of liquid cocaine through the San Ysidro border crossing, authorities said Wednesday.

The 46-year-old man drove a GMC Sierra pickup from Mexico through the port of entry about 3 a.m., officials said. A drug-detecting dog alerted to the back of the cab, and a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer found four plastic jugs hidden behind the back seat. The drugs have an estimated street value of $710,000, federal officials said.

Liquid cocaine is generally achieved by diluting the drug with water.

The driver, who is a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., was arrested, and the truck was seized. His name was not released.
