Travelers without visas to be required to register

Travelers without visas to be required to register

    Associated Press - June 2, 2008 11:43 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - A government official says starting next year, there will be an extra step for some travelers heading to the U.S.

People from countries that don't need visas to enter the States will be required to register online with the U.S. government at least three days before they visit. The official says Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff will announce the rule Tuesday.

The online registration will be valid for a 2-year period. The 27 countries whose citizens don't need to get a visa are mostly in Western Europe.

European businesses worry such a rule could make business travel tricky. The rule was first reported in the Financial Times.

Was unaware of this policy. What are the 27 countries?

So people from 27 nations could hop a plane or a ship and arrive in the U.S. without the government's permission or knowledge. Our government didn't know their destination or if and when they left.

I'd like to know what countries they are, too. I wasn't aware there was this many. Good grief. No wonder we're overloaded with illegals.
