ISLAND BEACH STATE PARK — A man discovered on the beach early Saturday morning died en route to the hospital, police said.

Fishermen found a naked Hispanic male at 5:25 a.m. about three miles from the park entrance, said Robert A. Gasser, Ocean County executive assistant prosecutor.

Park police responded and found the man alive but apparently hypothermic, State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said. He died as Triboro First Aid Squad transported him to Community Medical Center in Dover Township, Gasser said.

"There was no indication of trauma to the body or indication of assault," he said. An autopsy will be performed today at the hospital.

Police examined the man's fingerprints and determined he was arrested in Manasquan in 1996 on a disorderly-persons charge, Gasser said. Officials think the man was an illegal immigrant with several aliases, including Neferea LaFlores and Nicefro Agular Flores. Records show he was born in 1976.

Police in Berkeley and surrounding towns had received reports of a naked man in the area the night before, and they think it was the same man who was found Saturday, Jones said.

Anyone with information about the man is asked to call State Police Detective Harry McDermott at (609) 296-3132; Sgt. Kathy Timmerman of the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 929-2027; or Berkeley Detective Brian Woermer at (732) 341-6600, Ext. 136.
