ANAHEIM - Six suspects are in custody today after an enforcement action Wednesday, which culminated with the seizure of more than 100 pounds of Mexican brown heroin at an Anaheim home.

It is believed to be one of the largest heroin seizures ever made in California and one of the largest in the United States, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

The street value of the heroin is estimated at $4 million to $6 million, said Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office.

"This will put a big dent in the availability of Mexican heroin in California," said William Hayes, assistant special agent for ICE in Orange County. A significant seizure would be 10 to 11 kilos, he added.

The investigation began Wednesday afternoon after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the San Ysidro border crossing detected a vehicle entering the United States carrying five bundles of heroin.

The border agency alerted San Diego ICE agents, who tracked the vehicle to a residence on the 1400 block of West Chevy Chase Drive in Anaheim.

ICE agents, accompanied by officers from the Irvine and Anaheim police departments, searched the home, where they recovered a total of 121 pounds of heroin, as well as significant quantities of marijuana and methamphetamine, officials said.

All six suspects were arrested at the Anaheim residence. Two are female U.S. Citizens and the rest are Mexican males without legal status, Kice said.

    $6M heroin seizure ruled illegal

SANTA ANA, Calif., July 20 (UPI) -- A U.S. federal judge has ruled as unconstitutional a raid that yielded the most confiscated heroin in California history.

The judgment could jeopardize the prosecution of four Mexican nationals arrested in Anaheim on Valentine's Day during a no-warrant raid that yielded $6 million worth of drugs, the Orange County Register reported Friday.

The suspects, all possible illegal immigrants, are charged with possession of narcotics with the intent to distribute and face life in prison if convicted.

However, the judge hearing the case against two of them recently said drugs seized in the raid could not be admitted in trial as evidence because they were illegally obtained in violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Lawyers for the other defendants tried to join the argument, but the judge postponed their hearings to Aug. 6, the day before trial is scheduled to begin for all four.

"If you look at it that they got the drugs off the street, it's a big win," Loyola Law School professor Stan Goldman said. "But they did it in such a way that it might cost them the prosecution."

A spokesman said federal prosecutors are considering an appeal.

SANTA ANA – The government's case in a seizure of 121 pounds of heroin along with other drugs may be unraveling because the search of an Anaheim house was ruled unconstitutional.

U.S. District Court Judge James Selna ruled the heroin, the main evidence in the case, cannot be admitted against two defendants because the search was conducted without a warrant in violation of the Fourth Amendment.

Four defendants face trial Aug. 7 on charges of possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.

The ruling of unreasonable search and seizure ruling came last week after arguments by attorneys for brothers Jairo Ivan Ortiz-Diaz and Jose Luis Ortiz-Diaz.
