Man arrested; agents seize $484,750 at port

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized $484,750 on Nov. 20 after inspecting a car that was heading into Mexico. A 38-year-old Mexican man was arrested in connection with a failed attempt to smuggle the money out of the United States.

CBP Officers stopped a 1997 Buick Park Avenue at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday that was driven by a Mexican citizen from Nogales, Sonora. The officers were suspicious of his behavior and answers and decided to search the car.

Officers discovered boxes and containers in the back seat that had bundles of U.S. currency that the driver had not declared to the officers. The money totaled $484,750.

    Driver arrested

The money and vehicle were seized and the driver was arrested for violating currency-reporting requirements. He was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents for prosecution on bulk cash smuggling charges.
