A memorial of balloons, candles and stuffed animals sprouted Monday near the spot where a 6-year-old boy was struck and killed by a pickup truck in Providence.

Police said Derrick Johnson Jr., of North Providence, was struck and killed on Rosedale Street in the West End at about 6 p.m. Sunday. The family was picking up a cousin for a night at the circus.

Investigators said the child was with his mother when he got out of a car and ran into the road in front of a truck. The boy had severe head injuries and died at Hasbro Children's Hospital.

"The truck hits him, smacks him, and then runs him over. And the boy's in the middle of the street unconscious," said a neighbor identified only as Davon.

The scene was witnessed by Derrick's sisters, cousins and other children.

Family members said Derrick was in kindergarten at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School.

The Providence school district did not confirm Derrick's enrollment, but in a statement did acknowledge a kindergarten student was killed over the weekend.

"Our hearts go out to this young child's family in their grief, and our school and district crisis teams, including numerous counseling professionals and social workers, have been mobilized to offer support to friends, classmates and school staff who will surely be deeply impacted and saddened by the death of such a young student," the statement said.

Police told NBC 10 that the pickup driver, Andres Morales, 39, will be charged with driving with an expired license.

"Knowing that he didn't have a license. He wasn't supposed to be driving. It's tough. It's tough for everybody," Davon said.

Morales was being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Police said Morales was supposed to leave the country in 2009.

Another dead American child because our government failed to enforce our existing immigration laws and the requirements of the US Constitution.

How many tens of thousands of innocent Americans have been killed by illegal aliens?
