WASHINGTON, D.C. –Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) sent a letter to John White, Louisiana Superintendent of Education, regarding the economic and educational impacts of the unaccompanied alien children (UACs) residing in Louisiana.
“With Louisiana’s current budgetary shortfalls, it is completely nonsensical to allow these illegal immigrants access to educational services that are funded through tax dollars,” Vitter said. “Louisiana’s education resources are already stretched thin, and each of these additional burdens only increases the damage to our state. The President’s failed immigration polices continue to further increase the financial burden already being felt in the pocketbooks of Louisiana citizens.”
In September 2014, Vitter sent a letter to White regarding the state’s ability to handle the influx of the 1,275 UACs relocated to Louisiana. The annual cost to educate UACs in Louisiana was estimated to reach nearly $7 million for the 2014-2015 school year.
