Major riots broke out in Brussels, Belgium, the de facto capital of the European Union.



Police arrested over 100 suspects amid violence that even saw the King of Belgium's motorcade attacked with projectiles.

The turmoil has been blamed on the death of Ibrahima Barrie, a 23-year-old black male who passed away while in police custody.

Hundreds of protesters carrying "Black Lives Matter" signs held a "largely peaceful demonstration" which quickly devolved into chaos and destruction on Wednesday, the Associated Press reports.

Barrie was found to be in possession of ecstasy pills at the time of his arrest, and an initial autopsy indicates his likely cause of death was a heart attack, according to Sputnik.

However, an attorney for Barrie's family reportedly claimed during a press conference, "If Ibrahima had not been black, he would not be dead now."

More than 20 cops were injured during a night of violence, and at least one police station was set ablaze.


The motorcade of Belgium's King Phillipe was reportedly targeted in the melee, and his vehicle was struck with stones and other objects.

At least 116 people have been apprehended, including 30 minors.
