OR - Male minor detained by ICE at Marion County Juvenile Detention

    Lauren E Hernandez , Statesman Journal 7:57 p.m. PT March 2, 2017

A male minor was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Marion County Juvenile Court Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

Around 3 p.m., an undocumented minor was detained while at the court located at 2970 Center St. NE, said Faye Fagel, the Juvenile Department Director of the Marion County Juvenile Department.

"(ICE) did not tell us they were coming," Fagel said. "It wasn't until afterward that I was notified."

Fagel said Wednesday's detainment was the not the first time ICE agents stepped foot onto the Marion County Juvenile Department or detention center.

"It's not the first time but it's very rare - well, it doesn't happen very often," Fagel said.

Chuck Sybrandt, the deputy director of the Juvenile Department, could not recall the last time a juvenile was detained on the Juvenile Department campus, but said the last incident occurred a few months ago in 2016.

Fagel said the department does not have specific policies or procedures regarding ICE activity in its buildings, but did say they "follow county policies and directions."

Marion County Sheriff's Office provides courtroom security for the department, but was not present at the time the minor was detained.

"I have personally spoken with a deputy that provides security to the courtrooms there, and he did not know anything about it," said Lt. Chris Baldridge of the Marion County Sheriff's Office. "We did not assist with that."

It is unclear at this time if ICE agents passed through security to detain the minor, or waited in the lobby.

Rose M. Richeson, of the Office of Public Affairs for ICE's Seattle Field Office, said she could not comment on the minor's arrest.

It is unclear if the minor was staying in the detention center, attending a court proceeding or visiting a family member.

The minor's detainment comes on the heels of a Department of Homeland Security memorandum that implements President Donald Trump's executive order "Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements" issued in January.

Trump's order states it would initially prioritize undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes, specifically those who are convicted of a criminal offense.

Anyone who violates immigration laws, however, is still subject to arrest, detention and deportation.

The order does not affect recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, the Obama administration policy that allows undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as children eligibility for work authorization.

ICE agents recently confirmed 11 immigration arrests conducted in Woodburn, when agents stopped two buses of Latino farmworkers on their way to harvest flowers. The raid was “a targeted enforcement operation.”

The immigration agency also is believed to have played a role in targeted raids at the Multnomah County Courthouse in downtown Portland, where plainclothes agents detained a number of undocumented immigrants in January.

It's so wonderful!! It just brings calm to the frustration to know and see from the many articles everyone is posting that they are doing their jobs in a new common sense no nonsense manner.

THANK YOU ICE!! GET THEM MORE AGENTS FAST!! THEY NEED MORE HELP TO BE SAFE!!!
