SAN DIEGO — A man accused of exposing himself more than a dozen times, and who also may be connected to the attempted kidnapping of a 14-year-old girl, was arrested Thursday, San Diego police said.
Daniel Nestor Ortega, 21, was taken into custody about 2 p.m. on Akins Avenue near 64th Street in Encanto, said Sgt. Louis Valenzuela. Police said he was driving on Akins near 65th Street about 11:30 a.m. when he pulled up alongside a 17-year-old girl, asked for directions and then exposed himself.
The girl ran home and gave officers a detailed description of the vehicle – a light blue 1992 Toyota Previa mini-van – as well as part of the license plate number. Police found the van and took the Ortega into custody.
He admitted to police that he had exposed himself at least 13 times to teenage girls since April, Valenzuela said. Investigators are trying to determine if Ortega is the same man who tried to kidnap a girl in Encanto May 18. In that incident the teen was walking home from school on Brooklyn Avenue near 63rd Street when she was approached by a man in a van.
The girl said he asked for directions to a park, them moved to the passenger seat and grabbed her by the arm but she was able to free herself and run home. She described the van as a dark-blue 19802 Ford Aerostar with a light-blue sliding passenger door.
Ortega was booked into the central jail on two counts of indecent exposure where he is being held on $50,000 bail.
Valenzuela said Ortega is believed to be undocumented and he has been placed on an immigration hold.
Police are asking anyone with information on the crimes or who thinks they may have also been a victim to call detectives at (619) 527-3500 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (88 580-8477.
