Man accused of sexual assault held on $1 million bond
LEXINGON-A Lexington man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in May has been charged in Dawson County Court.
Melvin Hilario Gregorio-Mendez, 26, appeared before Judge Jeffrey Wightman in Dawson County Court on Thursday.
He is charged with first degree sexual assault, a Class II felony. If convicted he faces up to 50 years in prison, with a minimum of one year.
A warrant for Gregorio-Mendez’s arrest was issued on Jan. 24 following an investigation by the Lexington Police Department which began in May. Gregorio-Mendez was arrested on Saturday, Feb. 18, and booked into the Dawson County Jail.
At the time of his arrest bond was set at $1 million, with 10 percent, or $100,000, required for release.
The alleged sexual assault occurred the evening of May 26 or in the early morning hours of May 27. Gregorio-Mendez allegedly submitted an adult female, under the age of 21, who was under the influence of alcohol, to sexual penetration without her consent.
Wightman denied Gregorio-Mendez’s request for a reduction in bond, saying he appeared to be a flight risk because at the time of his arrest he was found with a consular ID card for Guatemala. Gregorio-Mendez was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.
A preliminary hearing has been set for 11 a.m. on March 8.
