Man acquitted in Las Cruces Border Patrol case

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Federal court jurors have acquitted a 36-year-old man of masquerading as a Border Patrol agent and attempting to detain a woman in Mesquite last year, but they convicted him of a third impersonation charge in a separate incident.

The jury in Las Cruces on Wednesday acquitted David Ramos-Arenas of 2 counts of false impersonation of a federal officer.

Jurors convicted him of the third charge, which stemmed from an accusation that he posed as a Border Patrol agent in February 2008 to help his girlfriend get out of a $115 speeding ticket.

He faces up to three years in prison.

No date has been set for sentencing.

A state district court trial last month for Ramos-Arenas on similar charges ended in a mistrial when the jury deadlocked.
