Mexican serial killer charged with 4 murder counts in U.S., O.C., CA.

Four murder counts filed against accused O.C. homeless killer

    January 17, 2012 | 11:40am

The Orange County district attorney today filed four counts of murder against a Yorba Linda man accused of slaying four homeless men over the last month.

If convicted, Itzcoatl "Izzy" Ocampo, 23, would be eligible for the death penalty, Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas said at a news conference, but no decision has been reached on whether prosecutors will seek to send the suspect to death row.

Ocampo was arrested Friday after he was chased down by two men in the wake of the stabbing death of John Berry, 64, behind an Anaheim fast-food restaurant. The stabbing is believed to be the fourth in a string of slayings that had left the homeless community on edge.

Ocampo, a former Marine who had served in Iraq, has been held without bail on a psychological watch at Orange County Jail in Santa Ana since he was detained.

The victims were identified as James Patrick McGillivray, 53, killed in Placentia on Dec. 20; Lloyd Middaugh, 42, who was found in Anaheim on Dec. 28; Paulus Smit, 57, in Yorba Linda on Dec. 30; and Berry.

Each victim was stabbed dozens of times, one more than 60 times, the district attorney said.

Prosecutors have labeled the case a "serial murder spree" but have not said whether they've pinpointed a motive. Ocampo's attorney on Monday said he'd yet to talk with his client, and had grown frustrated that authorities had prevented him from talking to Ocampo.

Ocampo was said by family and friends to have been increasingly troubled after he returned from a six-month stint in Iraq. They also described a young man who was unusually charitable and gave freely to the homeless.

Accused O.C. serial killer dies before trial in homeless slayings

A man charged in a "serial thrill-kill" rampage that left six people dead, including four homeless men and a woman and her son, died Thursday after being found sick in his jail cell, an Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman said.

Deputies found Itzcoatl “Izzy” Ocampo, 25, ill in his single-man cell about 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana, said Lt. Jeff Hallock. Medical staff at the jail attended to him and paramedics transported him to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, Hallock said.

Ocampo was pronounced dead at the hospital about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Hallock said.

For months Ocampo went undetected, authorities said, as a string of killings occurred in north Orange County, starting with the stabbing death of a childhood friend and his mother in their Yorba Linda home in October 2011. The killings continued on the streets with the slayings of homeless men.

A former Marine from Yorba Linda, Ocampo was arrested in January 2012 in Anaheim after the fourth homeless man, John Berry, 64, was killed outside a fast-food restaurant.

Prosecutors said Ocampo would select homeless men and stalk them, waiting for the perfect moment to end their lives. He set a personal goal of 16 slayings, authorities said.

Ocampo told police that he targeted the homeless because they were "available and vulnerable" and that he believed he was performing a public service because their presence was a "blight" on the community.

Ocampo had yet to be tried in the killings when he died, and Orange County prosecutors were seeking the death penalty.
