SANTA ANA - A man misidentified himself, claiming to be in the country illegally to evade attempted homicide charges in Santa Ana, Border Patrol agents reported today.

This morning, border agents in the Ajo Station in the Tucson, Ariz., sector arrested a man who was hanging out with a group of people in an area known for drugs and human smuggling, agent David Jimarez said.

Adolfo Aparicio is accused of attempting to fatally shoot his wife in October in Santa Ana.

Officials said the man first misidentified himself and claimed to be in the country illegally, possibly hoping to be deported, instead of having to face charges for the attempted homicide of his wife in October in Santa Ana.

Santa Ana police identified the man as Adolfo Aparicio, 29, of Garden Grove.

It wasn't until officials ran Aparicio's fingerprints through a records check that they discovered his true identity and that he's a U.S. citizen. The check also revealed a felony warrant for Aparicio's arrest on charges of attempted murder. He will be extradited from Arizona to face charges in California.

"The fingerprints never lie," Jimarez said.

Aparicio is a documented gang member who assaulted his wife and sister-in-law Oct. 23, Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

Police initially responded to a domestic violence call in Santa Ana where they saw the two injured women, before they went looking for Aparicio at his home in Garden Grove.

While there, someone told them Aparicio had left with a gun in hand. Soon after, they got a call of shots fired at the Santa Ana residence, Bertagna said. Police soon discovered the woman was shot at but not hit. Police said Aparicio soon left the area. The District Attorney's office soon issued a warrant for his arrest, Bertagna said.

Jimarez said agents have seen an increase in people with criminal backgrounds claiming to be in the country illegally so to avoid charges in the U.S.

TUCSON, AZ -- Authorities say Border Patrol agents arrested two men in separate incidents who claimed they were undocumented immigrants but were found to be U.S. citizens with warrants related to murder.

According to Border Patrol spokesman David Jimarez, Nogales agents arrested a male on Thursday who first claimed to be an "illegal alien" but then admitted to being a U.S. citizen.

When the suspect's fingerprints were processed, agents discovered an active felony warrant out of Pima County for his arrest on charges of "first degree murder."

He was turned over to the Tucson Police Department for extradition.

In a second incident, Jimarez says agents assigned to the Ajo Station arrested a man who also claimed to be an "illegal alien." His fingerprint records revealed a felony warrant for the man's arrest on charges of attempted murder in Santa Ana, California.

Agents learned that man was also a U.S. citizen. He was turned over to the Pima County Sheriff's Office for extradition.

"On a daily basis Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents arrest and discover individuals with violent criminal histories," officials say. "The Tucson Sector Border Patrol continues working in conjunction with local, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies to achieve our shared goal of reducing crime within our communities and improving the quality of life."

Man posing as illegal migrant arrested, jailed in '08 slaying
    By Brian J. Pedersen

    Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.09.2010

A 32-year-old man wanted in connection with a 2008 south-side homicide has been arrested after trying to pass himself off as an illegal immigrant, authorities said.
Daniel N. Taddey was detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Thursday in the Nogales area, a Border Patrol news release said.
He is the fifth person arrested in the Nov. 13, 2008, death of Frank T. Gonzales, 35, who was found shot to death in the 700 block of East 35th Street, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.
Taddey initially told Border Patrol agents he was an illegal immigrant but later acknowledged he is a U.S. citizen. Officials then determined he had a warrant for first-degree murder, the Border Patrol said.
He was turned over to the Tucson Police Department, which booked him into the Pima County jail on one count each of suspicion of first-degree murder and suspicion of kidnapping, Lopez said.
Two of Taddey's relatives — 33-year-old Carlos Taddey and 25-year-old Jose Taddey — were arrested in 2008 and are awaiting trial on first-degree murder and kidnapping charges, as is 30-year-old Gilbert Gonzalez, who was arrested July 30, court and police records show.
A fifth suspect, 35-year-old Ivan Chaparro-Garcia, pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution and was sentenced in October to 3 1/2 years in prison, court records show.
Chaparro-Garcia told police he helped get rid of bloody blankets and clothing associated with Gonzales' murder, court documents show.
