Man deported caught with $2 million in heroin

FLORENCE, Ariz.—An Arizona sheriff's office says it has arrested a man in a major heroin seizure just two weeks after he was deported for his involvement with a major drug trafficking ring in the state.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office says the man was first arrested in mid-October in one of three busts that the sheriff's office and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said dismantled the smuggling ring, which is believed to be tied to the Sinaloa cartel—Mexico's most powerful.

Sheriff's spokesman Elias Johnson said Tuesday that the man wasn't identified as a main target, and was turned over to the Border Patrol.

The sheriff's office says the same man was found in the U.S. on Monday with $2 million worth of heroin. They planned to announce more details later Tuesday.

Wait, this guy was caught in a drug bust but because he wasn't a 'Main Target' instead of being prosecuted he was just deported?

SOUTHERN ARIZONA -- The case is frustrating, but not uncommon. Deputies say a man crossed the border into Arizona, was busted with drugs, then arrested, then deported, only to return with almost $2 million worth of heroin.

How does this happen?

Some might say it's simple: The border isn't secure. Others believe the answer is manpower. The Pinal County sheriff brings up an issue of unequal enforcement.
