    MAN INDICTED IN TRANSPORTATION
    OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

By: CASEY KNAUPP, Staff Writer July 15, 2005

A federal grand jury handed up six Tyler indictments this week, including an illegal alien accused of transporting 16 illegal immigrants through Wood County.

Jose Joaquin Ibarra-Calderon was indicted Wednesday with transporting Jose Carmelo-Cruz and 15 others from Arizona to Wood County on June 17 for financial gain.

The man, who was also charged with unlawfully re-entering the United States after being arrested and deported, has been thrown out of the country about a dozen times in the last five years and has been arrested in four other states for transporting aliens, authorities said.

Ibarra-Calderon, also known as Rodolfo Sanchez-Fonseca, Jack Garcia-Solis, Jamie Gonzalez Hernandea and Ramon Labra-Gaspar, was ordered detained pending his trial by U.S. Magistrate Judge Harry McKee.

He faces up to 10 years in prison for transporting the aliens and up to two years in prison for re-entering the country if he is convicted.

Mineola police Officer Heath Burton stopped a Chevrolet Suburban for a traffic violation on June 17. Ibarra-Calderon was driving the vehicle that contained 16 illegal male immigrants and Burton requested assistance from Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE Special Agent Patrick Smith responded to the scene, according to his criminal complaint affidavit.

According to one of the passengers, Ibarra-Calderon allegedly offered to take Carmelo-Cruz from Phoenix to Florida for $500. The defendant instructed the foreign nationals "to get in the truck and lie down and try not to be seen because the police and immigration were working the highways," the affidavit states.

Ibarra-Calderon admitted to having been paid $1,500 by an associate in Phoenix to transport the aliens. Another of the passengers also told authorities he agreed to pay the defendant $500 once they arrived in Florida, Smith said.

Ibarra-Calderon also admitted that he had been arrested in New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas and Oklahoma for transporting illegal aliens. He has been deported about 12 times since 2000 and has a warrant out for his arrest in Arizona, according to the affidavit.

This is another feel good story that serves nobody.....I want them all deported NOW! How much do you think the public defender will cost the taxpayers? Then they will keep the illegals as witnesses for how long and then let them stay here?

Better to just deport them ALL now but the LAWYERS have to get the $$$$$ and the ICE wants you to think they are doing something when they ain't!
